Differences in paint type

What is the difference in the final look between- A tangerine kandy over silver metallic and a tangerine base with metallic in it?

the illution of depth would be a bit different. the tangerine base (candi base?) just wouldn't have the depth.

there is a trick i heard about though. if you put down the base coat of the tangerine, then when you add your clear you can build up depth by adding clear to your 2nd and third coats of the tangerine. this would allow the flake to dance a little more before your final clearcoats.

so...
shoot to cover w/ the basecoat color
add 3/4 bascoat to 1/4 clearcoat for another coat
add 1/2 basecoat to 1/2 clearcoat for the next layer of paint
add 1/4 basecoat to 3/4 clear for the next
and then do your full clear coat.

i think that's an order they'd use. i've never tried it before, but it does make sence to add a little depth to a basecoat color.

Your right Dirk. The way you described the process is exactly right. It will add so much depth, that it looks like the paint is 5 feet deep. Thanks for sharing, If I re call I think they did a vehicle on Trucks. It was done by Kevin Tetz. Might be worth checking out.

I'll check it out. Kevin is a great painter. I have an instructional DVD on auto painting he did. Must have been around 1995. The car he painted was a white '88 Vette. He had a humungo mullet back then.

Dirk is right...it's all about 'depth' perception.
Basically on a tangerine with metallic or pearl, it's more of a 2D effect. (WYSIWYG)
If you go with a tri-stage candy, you with more of a rich look than the 2D look.
Slang term "Candy" (candi, kandi, kandee...) is nothing more than a clear with 'dye' in it. So when you coat a metallic, you are actually seeing through the candy into the base metallic, thus giving more depth and a nice rich look to it.
Normally candies are painted over brighter metallic colors to bring out the richness even more.

That is kinda what I figured. Was wondering what the benefits would be on either paint systems. Obiously more depth on the candy with the trade off of a bit more work needed.
