I'm sure someone has tried this before, if you wanted to give the flames an outline and didn't want to airbrush or hand paint it, could you lay down the outline color and fineline over it, mask and spray your black or background color off of it, then mask and spray your flames? it sounds a little time consuming, but pretty safe.

Try this instead.
Paint your base, then layout the flames, paint the stripe color, fine line the stripe then paint your flames. You only have to layout your flames once, works pretty slick.

Yeah, you can do it that way. I like the flame shadow like that. Try watching Jon Kosmoski's Custom Flame Painting video. He does a set of flames on a motorcycle tank just like that. Excellent video trainer.
