hello all,
i tried searching the forum for what to use if you want to draw your design before taping. would you use chalk? or some kind of pencil? wondering if any one can help me out. Oh, and this drawing would be done on the base coat, or should i do a intercoat clear, scuff and then draw my design? thanks in advance

I use a stabilo pencil for the reason it is water soluble. If you have a dark basecoat then use a white or yellow. Vice versa for the light basecoat. You can get stabilo pencils at most art stores.

can you use this pencil on the base coat and just wash it off after? what do you use to wash it off with?

ok, sorry that last question was dumb i'll try to do better with this one.
if i use the pencil to draw out my design, say a detailed scene and airbrush over it will it affect the outcome of the work. like will the pencil line underneith make the airbrush work lift? does that make sense? lol /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif thanks in advance

I have made outlines on the basecoat and I have never had any problems with lifting, although what I do most of the time if I'm doing extensive artwork is I clearcoat the basecoat before I make outlines. This will not only give you a protective barrier it will allow you to fix screw ups while you airbrush. You can just wipe off the oops with some thinner.

You'll notice that when you do outlines with a stabilo pencil on clearcoat it will actually make a very light score into the clear. You can wipe your stabilo off with water and you still have the score as your outline. After that spray away.

On Goodeve's Tank Mural video he does a pencil drawing on the gas tank and then clears over it before starting to airbrush. It works for him.

I use some transfer paper I got from a fabric store to transfer some of the more complex designs to the surface I plan on working on. Tha pack I get comes with 4 different colors I believe, but forgot the name brand of the paper. It's the paper they use to draw sewing patterns with and there's no wax in it.

If I want to just wing it and draw directly on the tank I usually use some white chalk.
