Drop Shadow

Ok, so it's been kinda slow at work and I've been trying to do some shadows on a few test panels. Lets say that if my flames are masked off, overlapping areas cut out, then flames sprayed whatever color they would be. Now can I take fine line and mask the top flame off again where they overlap, then spray that edge with some over reduced black??? I have a few that look okay, but nothing I am completely happy with yet. Also, if I were to do the same thing on a light color or white, would I still use black to shadow, or maybe just like a grey or something? Seems to me that black would be too much, but what do I know, thats why I am asking for help!

Thanks in advance,

Scott instead of using tape for your cross overs.Try using a buisness card but hold it off the surface, this will give you a softer edge.as for the color, shadows are the absence of light. So try black or smoke with a little burnt umber color in it.

Just my .02 worth. I use over reduced black and fog it on with my airbrush. put enuff on to make a shadow but not enuff to cover the color below the shadow completely.you want to see some of that color just darker. Make sense?

I would go with the business card for the soft edge. I use a mix of candy rootbeer and purple to do my shadows. Not sure where the mix came from but it works and I have been using it for a long time. You could also try a few drops of the color you are going over in the black to give it a more natural look.
