HI THERE

I WAS LOOKING THROUGH THE H.O.K COLOUR CHARTS TODAY AND RUN PAST THE DRY PEARL SECTION. I WAS INTERESTED IN THE IDEA OF PLAYING AROUND WITH SOME OF THIS STUFF BUT WAS WONDERING AT WHAT STAGE OF THE PROCESS WOULD BE THE BEST TIME TO USE THIS
DO YOU FINISH OFF A JOB WITH THIS IN THE LAST CLEAR?
CAN YOU SPRAY THIS OVER A BASE BEFORE CANDY?
OR DO YOU SPRAY OVER CANDY?
WHICH DO YOU THINK WOULD GIVE THE BEST RESULTS?
MANY THANKS COL
WHICH WOULD GIVE THE BEST RESULTS?

You can put it under or over candy or over the base color before clearing. It will show through the candy but on top will show the pearl's color best.I mix it in base clear(intercoat clear) to keep the thickness down but you can put it in your first coat of top clear and put 1 or 2 straight coats of clear on top of it.

Rex, when you mix the dry pearl with intercoat clear, does that make it just like the pearl base coats you would get from HOK. In other words can you make up pearl base coats yourself for less expense than buying them already mixed from HOK?

if your refuring to the HOK Designer pearls, they are what HOK calls their fancier base coats which have a lot of pearlesance(spelling) added to the formula. a dry pearl is a pearl like additive added to a clear and sprayed over a base coat then cleared over for a very subtile effect, pearls must be final cleared due to the fact that you can nod sand a pearl directly becouce you will get scratch marks that will not go away. back to your question. yes you can but you wont get the same look. a little bit of pearl powder goes an extremly long way, this is one of those things where less is much better. darker colors are affected with less pearl than lighter colors. just a pinch in like a black or midnight blue gives a real cool effect. the only sugestion i can say is to do some spray out cards keeping track of every variation until you get your desired effect

Yeah, what he said. The basecoat pearls look to me like there's some low strength color mixed in with the pearls.I'm sure if you could afford to waste a few hundred $ you could make something similar but I owuldn't waste the time.I figure at about $55 a qt it's still cheaper than almost anything from PPG by a long shot.
