dupont ok?

Great site you guys. I'm just a novice only painted my bike and my sons a couple of times. Have been using Dupont basemaker and chromaclear. I see you guys all use PPG or HOC. I would like to know why dupont isnt the paint of choice, pros, cons of the various types of paint. Any input would be appreciated.

This should be moved to another forum, anyway. PPG and HOK offer many products that dupont don't. True dupont offers 10,000 colors but how many are you really gonna use??? Also dupont is designed to match current vehicles for spot on repairs (accidents and such.) HOK will not match any of todays vehicles unless you get very lucky. HOK also is very competetive with duponts prices. If you are still curious what both lines offer I suggest going to their respective websites and reading some of the lititure. I for one am a HOK man and think PPG sucks, but thats just because I shot cheap PPG paint and it looked like crap AND our local PPG dealer is not only stupid but is an A$$h@le, so I use only HOK and dupont.

Most of the stuff I do is custom so I use HOK. But when I have to do repairs and color matching I use PPG. Dupont is good also I just have run into issue where some of their colors and primer don't like to stick to each other. I'm not the only one so I tend not to use them.

I use Dupont stuff, and love it. The main reason I went with them is that the only two places in town that sell paint only carry DuPont. I don't want to get in the middle of a job and have to drive 15 minutes each way to get what I need......

I never had any problem with PPG, and I have never shot HOK.

I would think that if you are having a problem with bases sticking to primers, then you have an application problem, and not a product problem......

Alienboy,it's a good thing Scott didn't add a 'spank' graemlin /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gifI've used DuPont for a few months years ago in it's earlier bc/cc days and really can't say bad about it,I just didn't like the base texture unless I was doing a Ford metallic for that grainy look under the clear.Not sure what the cheap PPG was you used but it is a little different than Dupont and Squirley Williams and it's other names.Once you get it it's great stuff though.

The time I had trouble with Dupont was doing Ford Blue metallic was the color I believe. I went through and did it just like the Dupont guy said and it wanted to peel. After the 3rd time I went and asked a garge that uses only Dupont. He told me they have issue with some dupont colors don't like to stick to thier primers so they would use a different brand primer for certain colors.
So instead of me mixing, matching and finding out the hard way. I just switched to PPG and haven't had a problem yet. I'm not bad mouthing Dupont cause if they happenend to have a color I wanted to use I would with no reservations. I'm just explaining my story and what I had been told.

I started out my painting career with DuPont. I've had some weird issues with it, but over all it's an ok product. I've seen that issue with the paint pealing right off the primer and was told by a Dupont Tech that you have to use a sealer they make that stays tacky for a couple days. If you lay it down smooth, you can top coat it in 10-15 minutes and it's suppose to have a great bond.

I've had major problems with Dupont's clear, silver, and their jamming clear. I have had the silver sag under the 7500s clear, and I've seen their silver look lumpy. I'm not the only person with this issue 'cause I went to a Hot Rod show and there was a Dupont display with some gastank shells painting in custom designs. The one painted silver had an orange peel texture in the paint. Two other issues I've experienced, or hear about with Dupont is the colors are sort of muddy compare to HoK & or PPG's Global line (example: Dupont white isn't has brillant as HoK's white, or the yellow isn't has vibrant etc etc.). The other issue I've heard about is that Dupont's paint laysdown thicker than HoK, PPG's etc. This works for you and against you. I've had Dupont's paint cover quickly in some flames in where HoK took lots of layers and time to get opaque. I felt more of an edge on Dupont's paint and that takes more clear to burry. I have sprayed some thin coats Dupont yellow into some flames and then top coated with HoK Lemon yellow to get a very vibrant color in a short time frame.

The BIG deal with HoK is their vibrant colors and they're mainly used for the World of custom painting. That's why they are mentioned frequently. I've seen a lot of top painters use both HoK and another BIG name automotive paint brand together to achieve the results they want.

If I have a customer come in wanting a specific color, or color match I usually run down to the local Dupont paint store and get it mixed. They get it dead on, the job gets done & the customer is happy.

The main thing that pulled me away from using Dupont was the price of their product. I can get HoK much cheaper, even when the Dupont store orders it for me.

Currently i'm checking out Valspar, but can't tell you much about their product now. If there's any feedback about Valspar post away!

Valspar is the current owner of HOK. I've heard good and bad things about them (also that HOK isn't as good as when John owned it). I've had good results with Dupont, PPG and HOK. I have noticed that the HOK base colors tend to blush in high humidity much like lacquer. I understand Dupont is getting ready to introduce a custom color line to compete with HOK. Anyway, I like the smell of lacquer and it's a lot easier to clean out of your nose than urethanes. TC /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
