Ever had this happen to your pin striping

After spraying some clear (HOK UC-35) on my tanks and fenders I noticed that in some spots the gold striping was running and cracking. Now I had already cleared over it (same UC-35) and wet sanded the high spots down. I did try spraying the clear a little heavier then the first time to see if it would get rid of the little peal I had before.

I should mention that I striped it by putting down two stripes of tape and using a brush to apply the paint. After doing the tanks I discovered that using a little more reducer and getting the tape off faster seemed to give me less of an edge. The front fender is fine and the rear just has one small spot. The first shows some runs and the second picture is a close up that shows the cracking of the striping.

I've had that ahppen before, not quite as drastically as yours. I think what happens is after I clear the graphics then sand with 800 wet to knock the tape edge off, it sometimes breaks through the clear, and then when you lay the striping on it makes the underlying base lift a little, because the base that gets brushed on is so heavy.

How long are you letting the pinstripe dry before clearing?. Many recommend 1 hour. I let it dry overnight then put adhesion promoter then clear. Never had any problems. If it looks like it is reacting (HAZING< CRACKING< then simply sand down the area with 600 grit then apply more pinstipe let it dry then re-clear. Remember if the pinstripe is still wet it will run, especially if over reduced

I agree i let my stripes sit over night, and never had a problem with the stripes running when cleared over. Next time if you want add a couple of drops of catylist to the striping paint for a precaution if you dont wanna let it set over night. also you might not want to lay the clear on so heavy the first couple of coats this also helps a bit.

Rex, thanks man. As you can tell i still have my head up my butt. The trip was WET, i got to put about 200 miles on the scooters on Saturday, the weather was perfect that day. The weekend was full of mechanical problems, i had a mirror vibrate off, had a spark plug wire vibrate off in a very bad situalion, what dose this mean? Build your motor and watch the rest of the bike fall apart.

and i lost a fender on my trailer on the way home,

but all in all it was Kool. THink i'll go back next year ? Hell yeah, you cant beat the sceanery in good old PA. Next year it will be in August, HD is seperating all the open houses due to the 100 th so the weather should be a little nicer and more predictable. The better half will be able to enjoy it more sence she dosent start feeling crappy until September. Its strange how the change of seasons bring out peoples illnesses more, but shes a trooper and cant wait to get on the scooters this weekend. Any way enough of me , how are things on your end? putting on the miles? Talk to you latter.

,seems almost anything sets that stuff off.Put a few miles on but less than usual. We slid up to Ybor's Bikefest last weekend and talked with Scott briefly, man is that a small gig.It was about one city block large, but I suppose it'll grow over the years.Something has to happen because Daytona's going down pretty quick.Hopefully next month I'll pop my tank off to be lettered since I think she's done soaking in.Nothing most people will notice but it sucked up a touch around the tape line.My fault really.I happened to look at the label the other day and it said DT885.OOPS,it was over 90 when I did it.I guess thats why I got a few tape tracks.Well, take care man and take care of the little lady, talk to you soon.

I should have mentioned that it was the first and only coat of clear that I applied on top of the 3 coats to flatten the striping. What happened was when I went to spray the clear my gun wasn't spraying right (didn't clean it good enough) so I poured the paint into my primer gun. All the while my glasses kept fogging up inside the goggles I was wearing. Then with not being able to see good I tried to spray the clear anyway. After the first coat I cleaned off my glasses and looked back at the parts and saw paint dripping off. I couldn't believe I sprayed it on that heavy.

I noticed this morning that in one spot it also went through the 3 coats of clear, the SG-100 over the graphics, and put a dime size spot on one of the flames. Oh yeah due to a funeral the parts had sat untouched for two days after flattening the clear over the striping before I went to do the final clear. So everything should have been dry. So now I'm just going to strip it and start over after I finish the set I'm working on now. Well for my first time with real paint and equipment I sure did learn a lot (of what not to do). What would be better for removing the paint, using a aircraft grade stripper, or having it sand blasted ?

I had some metallic paint run like that once. The PPG guys told me that some paint, particulary metallic, is prone to 'reactivate' when more paint is applied on top of it, making it run. They suggested a hardener, or a paint with hardener in it already. Tried that and it worked.

I'd brush a coat of stripper on it but stay away from places that the stripper can seep into like between the tank body and where the mounting flanges are welded on.The stripper should pull it off fast but bead blast the the other spots.that's about the fastest way and too much or impropper blasting can warp things in extreme cases or thin down brazed nipp;es causing them to leak.

try what ez said and add some catalyst it seemed to cure alot of problems with my striping and it's also good to wait longer before you clear.
