Fairing Material

Anyone know if the fairings on sport bikes, such as a Honda VFR, are painted plastic or just dyed plastic? I may be bidding on a paint job on a VFR and want to know what I'm getting into before giving a number.

The owner just emailed and said the fairing is plastic, no paint. He doesn't want to clear it because he wants to keep the entire bike looking the same. I guess I could use a single stage paint, but how would I prep the surface since I won't be clearing? Anyone done anything like this before?

Strech, what's wrong with the fairing? If it's cracked or damaged and you have to use sem-weld or something I don't see a way out of clear coating it. Would it be that noticeable to clear it? Good luck.

if it's a satin finish on the rest of the bike you could use a dulling agent in the clair, this reduces the shine. If you are trying to get just a little shine ,maby acrylic anamel would do the trick. I would ask the local paint supply guys, they may have a better idea of what will work in this situation.

The fairing is in perfect condition which is the problem. He just wants to add flames but keep it the same shean (sp?) as the rest of the bike. I'll ask the local jobber but if anyone else has any insight, please pipe in.

Anyone know what happens to an adhesion promoter if it's not painted over. I'm trying to figure out how to do this fairing without sanding it and possibly using a single stage. If I spray the adhesion promoter over the area I want to add flames and just paint single stage after that but worry about the adhesion promoter causing problems?

If you are careful you can scuff it with grey scotchbrite pad after you tape the flames. Or even spray the adhesion promoter after it is taped.

The plan is for realistic flames so there wouldn't be any tape. I guess I could use the scuff pad to 'layout' the flames? Keep the ideas coming.

In your case the best bet would be to match the sheen of the clear to the rest of the bike or clear the whole bike. Without proper prep work there are too many problems that could come up, even if you use single stage basecoat. The customer may just have to settle for the extra gloss on the front.

Thanks mojoz-

I tend to agree. I'm sure i could do it in One-Shot without a problem but I'd be really worried about not clear coating. I'll be sure to let you all know what happens.

Im very new to painting but have been around a TON of sportbikes, its a big hobbie of mine. Ive done a lot of Custom stuff but Im starting to learn to paint. Sportbike fairings are painted and stickered with very little clear on them. I would tell the customer that painting the whole bike is a must! There is no need to waste your time on the garbage paint that the OEM puts on the fairings

Just start from scratch. Heres some of my old bikes. These are all HOL paint with no decals. I hope to someday paint like this!

In my opion sometimes the customer isn,t right & needs to be convinced of what would be best tell him it would be so much sweeter if you cleared the hole bike as well as protective to the custom flames you'll be putting on hell even tell himm you could put some pearl in with the clear show him some pictures of other bikes also you need to find out what type of plastic the thing is some don't need adhesive promoter some do I am doing a personal water craft half of it is ( pp ) needs promoter other half ( up ) doesnt need you should be able to find some letters on the plastic if you need to know what they mean I will post link if you ask as for the flames I sure wouldn't want to do something for a customer which you dont think is best remember your work is your advertisement & ! bad job can be more costly then it is worth!!!
