Faux Hammer Finish

Hey guys!
First time poster and long time lurker here. I've learned quite a bit from the forum and found this to be the go to place for any paint questions I've had. My latest project is painting some deck hardware on my boat. I think a hammered finish black "dimples" on a gray base would really dress the pieces up! However, I have no clue how to go about achieving this look. I thought about laying down the base and then applying the black by wetting a dowel or something and lightly tapping the hardware. I haven't tried it yet, but that is the only thing I can come up with..... Anyone have a better idea or particular technique?
Thanks,
Andrew

there is a rattle can you can get at walmart that does that finish. don't know of a way to do it w/ regular paint w/o a bounch of airbrushing, and i don't think you want to airbrush on hardware.

i've used the rattle can before on my house vents and what not, but make sure you get all the rust off and prime it w/ a good primer to prevent rust.
