I've read alot on here and it has given me the confidence to shoot my bike myself. What i have is ppg radiance, silver base with orange glow kandy. I am going to airbrush the flames with copper bas over the silver then kandy and clear. Should I use a clear over the silver before putting down the flames? Also on the spec sheet it says to spray the kandy over the base while its wet (10min) is this neccesary, how can I do this and shoot flames? Any help would be great.

Thanks ........ Dan

bookem,
I'll be anxious to hear an answer to your question, as I too am preparing to do my first job and needing to know the same thing. I want to shoot one base, shoot flames with another base and then candy one color over everything. I had read where someone recommended shooting a clear that you could sand prior to taping flames. I may take hours and probably days to tape off my flames, so I think I'm in the same situation. I had planned on pulling flame tape and then doing my candy coats and clears in succession.
Although I have considered shooting my flames with a flake instead, I imagine the same rules would apply.
Thanks in Advance,

Rule # 334 in Custom Painting:

Always use a clear / intercoat clear over a metallic base before any "art" is to be applied over the metallic base.

The Reason: You will need to scuff or sand the base so that the paint for the art has something to "grab" hold off. If you sand or scuff the metallic base you will end up scratching the tiny flakes and will end up with a mess - Clear or Intercoat clear will give you a buffer between the base color and the art.

Tip: - Sand down with nothing less that 800 grit and becareful around the edges. If you are laying out flames use some white chalk to sketch out you design. Then grab your blue fine line 1/8 tape and start taping your flames - don't worry about the chalk lines yet -- after they're laid out, mask what you don't want painted in your flame colors with 1/4 - 1/2 - and 2 inch tape - after its all masked out - take a damp soft cloth or sponge and wipe away any chalk lines - shoot your flames - pull your masking - wipe away any left over chalk after flames are dry and then clear -- I used to do it the hard way by laying out the flames with tape - no I sand - pulll out the chalk and get it the way I want it - and it takes me about half the time - Good Luck --- Bones!~

Bones,
This statement "wipe away any left over chalk after flames are dry and then clear"
would you please further explain "are dry and then clear"
So are you saying another intercoat clear, let dry, sand and then come back with the overall candy coats?
Sorry, but I'm truly a newbie at this.
Thanks,

Nope -- What I mean is, After you shoot your flames - let them dry like 30mins - if you're using base coat / if your using Kandies it'll take about 6 to 12 hours - anyway -after you're sure it's dry - remove your masking - the masking usually picks up any chalk residue but you should still wipe it with a damp cloth or sponge to be sure it's all gone - blow dry the excess water with an air gun - inspect all the parts to make sure you have no mistakes.... and then shoot your final topcoat clear -- Bones!~
