I am in the process of stripping a set of tin for my 2002 road king and I have a lot of questions about whats needed to put down a pearl white base with kandy red and blue flames.
Can I put down a white base, clear then do the flame pattern with red then blue then use a 2 stage pearl over the hole job.
Or do I have to shoot the base then pearl then shoot the flames.
I have talked to My local Automotive paint shop and they tell me I cannot use kandy red of blue that I have to use metalic instead because pearls are 2 stage. can some point me in the right direction here. Thanks for all your help.

First of all, unless you have a VERY clean booth I advised against painting the white pearl. White pearl shows EVERY speck of dust. I would shoot a few test panels first to see how everything works together.
IMO I would shoot your white, then pearl it and clear.
wet sand with 600-800 grit (everyone has a different opinion about this)
shoot your blue kandy first
wet sand again
shoot your red and clear.
The reason I would shoot the blue first is that some blues (candy cobalt blue, burple) bleed like crazy. If it does you can clean it up without ruining the red.
Like I said, this is my opinion of how I would do it. I don't know exactly what your style is, or what this will look like.
I hope this helps.

I am painting my first flame job. I am letting a pro do the base coat and first coat of clear. I will then apply the flames, then let the pro finish clear and buff out. The base is HOK sparkle pearl black. I want to do a siver and vibrant blue ghost flame, but not as subtle as I've seen on other bikes. I want to use HOK paints. Anyone have any tips on which paints, colors and so forth?

This reply is from my own experiance....please don't get pissed off because I offer my opinion. My opinions are mine, you don't have to like them.....now that my waiver is said.

Don't do the black pearl with (candy?) blue ghost flames. The black pearl has a silver sheen to it in the daytime and will make the ghost flames look bad. A solid color is better. I painted a black pearl/blue ghost flames on a bike and the owner was very dissapointed. I ended up re-doing it with a black base coat and it looked wonderful.
Once again, this is my opinion.
