First paint job - crap in paint

Halfway through my first paint job (Suzuki TL1000) i have sanded (600g) and primed fairing and have just put on my first coat of filler/primer. The problem is im getting crap in the paint, little bits/specs, so i filtered the paint thru an old stocking, less crap but will still be an issue come base/clear coat.
is there a special device/strainer for pouring paint through? Im going to buy a better air filter also.

One more thing, when i come to do my base coat/clear coat, can i sand the base coat first if it has any imperfections in it?

Using PPG enamels.

Thanks

Depends on where the stuff in originating, but I'd start with an acutal paint strainer. Most paint places will give you a handful when you buy paint. If not, they are cheap to buy and worth the money. If crud is getting into the paint after you squirt it, then you have a problem with stuff floating around in the air. Get a fan and suck in some filtered air. Lots of threads on this board about that, so do a search for some particulars.

You can sand basecoat, but be careful to avoid sanding down to primer. Sand very lightly with a fine grit paper. I don't let the basecoat build up very thick. They way I figure, once it's covered...it's covered, and there isn't any point to putting lots of layers on.

Good luck, and let us know where the crud is coming from so we can avoid the same problems.

Thanksandy, i have got some strainers coming next week, and i have ordered a better air filter, the one that came with the compressor is pretty small.

Will let you know the out come, thanks again.

Andy covered you there, sorry about the delay. All I can add is I prefer to piss a light coat of base over the sanded spot.If it's a metallic or pearl it's mandatory, and if it's a candy or tinted clear in a tri-stage you better be really damn good and nip it lightly.
