First time using HOK, and a few questions....

I have always used Dupont, PPG, etc in the past. This time I want to paint my Hayabusa and use HOK candy.

The thing is, I am not sure of a few things. How much candy do I need to to the fairings, fender, tail, and tank? With regular paint I would probably just buy a quart and be good, but I am not sure if the candy goes as far? I am guessing that a quart of primer would be suffiecient. Do I need to use their silver sealer, or will the grey KD3000 be sufficient? I take it that Orion silver would probably be used under a blue, but you could use gold under an orange, like Persimmon? I will probably not be painting anything else for a while, so I would hate to buy a gallon of primer and have to throw a bunch away......

Also, where is the best place to purchase?

I have been looking at every Tech page I can find for this stuff, and have learned a lot about it, but I am sure I will have more questions as I get closer to painting this project..... The HOK line is slightly confusing, lol....

It may be pricy but its very user friendly. shimrin bases come in lots of colors, all depends on the shade you wanna end up with. their candy charts show each candy over each base color. keep in mind, the lighter the base, the more difficult evenly applying the candy will be. but on a bike ? candy coverage can be done blindfolded .the Orion silver looks great under either the oriental or cobalt blue .being translucent, the more coats ,the darker it will be. 1 1/2 silver base mixed should be enough for 3 coats/ to be safe I,d go with 2 qts candy as you may be putting down 5-6 coats. their uc-35 clear is the best out there. another 1-1/2-2 qts would do. W/ H.O.K. systems the same reducer is used from start to finish. don't let it intimidate you its incredibly easy to use with fantastic results. TCP global is one supplier .however, I deal w/ coast air brush in Cal. super prices (considering) and they will sell you any amount of product, you can buy it by the oz. check out their web site. I live in new hampshire and can buy it locally ,but I always deal with coast the savings is worth a couple days wait.

Thanks for the reply! That was some useful information.... I had noticed that about the reducer, that simplifies things, lol!

Do you have a link to their color chart? I had never seen the actual one that you can use to predict the finished result.

I swear, every day I wake up, I change my mind about the color and graphics I am going to do......Price will play a part in it, as I cannot afford to buy a bunch of stuff to experiiment with. The bike is getting close to needing primer. Since it is aftermarket race fiberglass fairings, I have to trim to fit. SO I need to make sure that everything is perfect before I waste paint on it , lol

http://www.coastairbrush.com/ this is hands down the best custom paint store in the country, excellent service, best prices anywhere and a super cool web site. you could spend hrs on it. good luck and happy painting. you may have to call for the color charts. their not cheap but well worth the money

Great advice from jdean, he knows his stuff. Best thing with colors, is to get a chart from your supplier, your computer monitor won't give you the "real deal" in the colors and special effects that the paint has.
Also, I've found great prices and service from smartshoppers.com. The only thing I dont' get from them is the reducer, because of shipping weight, it's less expensive to get it locally, but paints, even with shipping, are better priced from smartshoppers.

Thanks for the help guys.......

I compared prices between Coast and TCP, tcp was a bit cheaper.

I ordered the kd3000 primer, the catalyst, and some reducer last night. I have to splt the order up to keep my wife from having a coronary, lol...

Here is a pic of the project. This is the most current pic that I have.... I started with a 2000 model Hayabusa that had been wrecked. Purchased an extended swingarm, Yamaha R1 wheels (Lots lighter than stock), 2008-up Gen 2 Race bodywork, with an 8"extended tail. Got a new sidewinder pipe for it as well. The engine is stock except for the pipe and 55 shot of nitrous.

I have a factory tank that I sectioned and lowered, but it is not finished yet.

HOK are horrible for coverage (at least Orion Silver and Solar Gold). I like to use a regular silver/gold base for coverage and then follow up with the Orion Silver/Solar Gold for the heavy metallic effect.
