Fixing a whoops....Pinstriping flames

Hey Gang,
I had read books and articles on pinstriping and if you make a mistake, use Denatured Alcohol to wipe it off and fix it.

Well, I did that and the alcohol burned thru my laquer clear coat. Should I have used something else??? Is there something else that won't ruin your clear, graphics, etc??

I had just flamed a guitar and cleared it and wanted to add pinstriping. The brush kicked out on me so I needed to fix it. I used a Q-Tip and some denatured alcohol and wore a spot in the clear.

My only remedy that I see for that is to do a "slash" stripe, which I only hope the customer will like.

Any suggestions???!!! Please!!!

Thanks,
Anthony

Next time use a wax and grease remover with a q-tip or corner of a rag.

Wax and grease remover does work good, give your base some time to dry, then you can lightly wipe to get the mistake off.If your rag is too wet or you rub too hard, you can still mess it up so be careful.Reducer reactivates the base making a mess.

You didn't say what kind of paint you are using. If you use ONE SHOT you can use Mineral Sprits and it won't hurt your clear or base coat. Not sure what to use with other stripping paints.

Burnt,
I sprayed MirraChrome flames and then cleared with, dare I say it, a rattle can Laquer clear coat. It looks nice, I even buffed the finish too. The pinstripe brush didn't want to cooperate with me. It kicked out on me once or twice making the line rather unappealing. I used Denatured Alcohol (which the book says to use for whoopses), but for some reason it burned thru the clear. I was in shock!! I wanted to throw the guitar across the room. I even tried regular Isopropyl Alcohol, but that almost did the same thing. I'm using OneShot enamels and the striping was still wet when I tried to fix the boo-boo. I wound up going with a "slash" stripe instead, just because I had prolonged this project long enough and needed to get it finished. If the customer does not like the slash stripe, I will more than likely have to wet sand down the stripe back to the clear, reclear and then restripe hoping the brush cooperates this time. I don't know if Mineral Spirits will be too agressive and remove the clear as well.

Thanks for all comments!!

If there's a layer of clear between your pinstrip and your base & if you're somewhat patient you can wet sand off the mistake with 1000 grit paper. Just do the mistake area and then carefully re-pinstripe. Then recoat with clear.

If you were using Urathane clear you can remove mistakes with reducer/denatured alcohol and a q-tip w/o eating into the clear after it cured

I'm not too familiar with rattle can clear, but I don't think it will hold up to chemicals real well...could be wrong... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

The problem is your using a laquer spay can clear. You would have been fine with a catalized urathane. Since you use spray can, about the only thing I think might work for a whoops would be to let it dry then wetsand it off with water.

Mineral Spirits only works when the ONE SHOT is still wet to simi dry or still soft. I don't think it will hurt the clear you used, but you can try it on a spot that dosen't show.

You can shoot a unrethane clear over the spray can clear, if it is an enamel. I've learned that if you spray a canned enamel paint over a clear that has been sanded you'll end up with a scalie reaction in the paint. It will krinkle up on ya.
You should get a good clear on the project, the canned clear will react w/ anything and it'll loose its gloss. The urethane clear doesn't react w/ as much stuff, and it will keep its gloss for a long time.

As one who shoots guitars as well as auto bc\cc on the instrument for sound quality you want to use nitrocellulose laqs you can try napha if stripe paint is fresh other wise let dry & wet sand out. The nice thing about nitrocellulose laqs is repair ability as your thinner will cut right thru to bare wood if need be as well as allow you to do burn ins for repairs good luck to ya /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/peace.gif
