I havent shot any flake sense the 70's and how that dates me. Anyway, I'm gonna shoot a 93 Dakota with a green firemist bc/cc and then shoot a Orange flake over that with a midcoat before I shoot the clear. My problem is, whats the best size flake to do this with and how much should I add to the clear? I'm thinking a small say, .004 or .008 flake cause I'm not looking for it to slap you in the face. But I want it to be able to be seen. thanks for any help. Duey:ears:

Hey Deuy, have a look at some of the mini flakes that are out there. You also may want to look at crystals to tone it down, if thats the look your after. Hok and Innate carry these products. The 70's huh, well there's sure been some changes and different products since then. your gonna have fun making up your mind. Oh yeah, forgot, check out old school flake, they to have some killer stuff to. Just out of curosity did you ever try a flake gun. Keep us posted will ya. Good luck. Oh and welcome to the forum, lots of info here.

No man never used a flake gun, don't even know if one exsisted in the 70's. It was a real pitb back then I do remember that. I remember the last thing I shot flake on was a old van, spent days putting that stuff on and the day after I was done some idiot burned the place down, well the booth anyway, threw a butt in the vent and it burned. Van and all. Anyway, I check out innate and old school, HOK is usually ut of my league. later

I hear you, on the HOK. Some of it can be a little pricey .So check out Innate,he's got some killer stuff. He's the distributer for Old School Flake.

well normally it will take a pound for a full size truck.and thats full coverage But it's certainly going to be in your face, which is what I assume you dont want. So to confuse you a little more have a look the ghost pearls. The G/pearl is pretty powerful so you would only need about 2 oz. Even then you'll have a little left over. It's avail in many colors, and the green in the clear would look good.. The fire mist green would reflect through clear and the pearl would give off the spectrum colors, but leaning towards the green of your base.

Like Brian said, you may want to check out the Liquid Crystals. These are small, but have a VERY dramatic effect.
I say this because it sounds like you just want a little sparkle, not a full blown metalflake job. Sometimes if you go with the larger flakes and just spray them so there is very light coverage, it ends up looking like little specs of dirt laying on top of your basecoat when the sun is not directly on it.
The clear covers the crystals very easily. I would think you could do light coat with about 1 1/2 pints.

I've used the PPG Vibrance Liquid Crystals. Expensive, but very sharp!!!

Not to completely hijack this thread, but how much flake do you put in the clear? I am using small quantities of paint, usually mixing in pt. cups. Is there a standard measurement of flake that goes in for the best coverage? Thanks, Christopher
