Flakes clogging gun

I have been using a 2.2 tip on my devilbiss finishline II HVLP gun and spraying flakes through the intercoat clear. It is the biggest tip that is made for that gun. The flakes are about 1/64" in size. What can I do to stop the gun from clogging during spray?

Possibly they are just gathering at the bottom of your cup. I use a 1.7 and have no problem spraying some "chunky style"

flakes through the gun. Try putting a nut or bolt in your cup and shake it around every once in while. See if this helps.

This is assuming, you added the flakes with somesort of basecoat clear.

Also...a little tip on spraying flakes, use low air pressure. Alot of painters think you need to use a high air pressure to blow on the flakes. It's the opposite.

Is this happening as you spray or after you wait for the nexy coat?.Flakes tend to settle fast so I dump my cup between coats and give the gun a quick flush by spraying an ounce or 2 of thinner through it.If you're doing something large like the side of a car I shake the gun to stir things up at the end of a full length pass.

Nope it was during the spray on the first coat, I will definately try putting a nut in the cup though, that is a great idea, I will also lower the pressure from 23 at the gun to 16-18

Thanks

I don’t know how much flake jobs your going to paint but I’ve been looking into a cup agitator. I’ve seen a few one was on a Sata and the other was mounted to an Iwata. I just started to look into it because I thought it might work pretty good to keep candies and metallics stirred up in the cup. I might start a post regarding it to see if anyone else uses one.

IN THE OLD DAYS I USED TWO OR THREE BALLS FROM A OLD BALLBEARING TO AGITATE THE PAINT.
