flame paint edge

What is the best way to get rid of the paint edge left after removing the outline tape on the flames? ...bc/cc system of course

Someone told me you can whack it down with 2000 grit and then spray your clear but I haven't tried it yet. On mutlicolor flame jobs I've always sprayed a non catalyst clear (i.e PPG's- Global D895) between colors and have had good luck with little or no edge. If sanding method is true it would save a lot of time and save on the amount of final clearcoats. Has anyone tried it or know of a good way?

Sometimes, I will spray the flames, then clearcoat it, DA it down with 600, then reclear. This gives you an absolutely beautiful flat finish with very little withstanding and buffing.
Make sure you have enough coats to do this though. You don't want to sand through the clear.

Thanks for the tip Scott; I’ll have to give that a shot. When you say clear I take it you mean regular cat. clear and not the non-cat/inner stage clear I mentioned, correct? How many coats on the average do you do before hitting it with the DA?

I also had one other request… how about doing another “How to-“ but this time do a layered flame job with drop shadows and outline the flames. …Kind of an advance course.

I personally would love to see this, for one I think you do some the nicest intertwining / layered flame I’ve ever seen (and I’ve seen a lot) and two doing such a “how to-“ with that criteria would answer half the post on this board.

...I know you can't give up all your secrects though but it would be very helpful to all

I do use regular clear for this. I usually spray 2 coats for this.

I would like to do some more How-Tos, but right now, I am absolutely slammed with other web stuff (good stuff though

).
I just got Road Runner cable in my office. So now I have it at home and at work. Oh boy...more computer time

Maybe down the road, I'll do something like that.
