What is the best way to draw flames to prepare for painting?

Just keep drawing them on anything you can find to draw on. Get a couple rolls of fineline tape and practice laying out flames on whatever will sit still long enough. I can't tell you how many times i have wasted a roll of fineline because I was bored and wanted to try some flame layouts on my truck. I even painted flames on my compressor tank, and one of those fold out metal chairs.

just do like kevslx said paint everything that doesn't move. garbage cans, mailboxes, chairs, sign blanks, I've turned some peanut harley tanks into banks for my friend's kids as a Cristmas present. the main thing is variety practice on flat surfaces as well as round.
