Flames over Black Primer?!? Any Advice?

I'm thinking about painting my daily driven 1969 Impala black primer to hide it's many flaws.

I would like to paint clearcoat flames over the hood, trunk, down the side of the body, and behind the wheelwells.

Some people have told me that a daily driven car should not be left in primer, that it will absorb moisture.

I've also been told there is a "Tractor Paint" available in a flat black that is tough & durable.

Is this a reasonable idea?

Any and all advice greatly appreciated.

The one thing i do know is that primer is basically an adhesion and prep not a finish and with such a great classic take your time and fix the flaws. If you're looking for a cheap way to cover it without to many noticable flaws paint it flat black.........or white

Thanks, That seems to be what everyone else is saying.

I'm now thinking about painting my car flat black, with gloss black flames over the sides, trunk & hood. Finish them off with a pinstripe (colour tbd).

Any advice on a good quality flat black paint? Something that will adhere properly?

You can use catalyzed primer-its water proof within reason. It's also fairly pricey. You can also shoot (black?) paint with a flattener. It will give you the primer look but be much more durable. Also, many manufactures have bulk black single stage premixed (I've bought Nason this way--it's a cheaper brother of Dupont)--so it's cheap. I'm not certain on the price of the flattening agent. You can also try painting it then sanding to dull it to the suede look with about 600 grit. Painted one this way, but then decided I wanted the gloss, so it didn't stay this way for long so I'm not certain about long term durability.

If You notice the motorcycles today,Such as the Buells,New Yamaha R1,and CBRs...Their using A matt black paint job!

If I was You,I'd get rid of Your "many Flaws",and buy the right paint!
Espeacially on such a classic car like A 64'!!
