ainting flames on a vehicle with stock paint, (usually clearcoat) how would you prep the area? would you reclear the entire vehicle or just where you laid the flames?...

I am not an experienced painter, but I would say that you would have to wet sand the whole panel whether it is the hood or quarter panel, paint the flames, then reclear the whole panel. I know that this is how they spot paint a panel that is cleared.

lilduster, this is ho i would do it. wet sand the panels to be flamed with 600 grit wet, do your art work, clear panels that you had sanded. let dry, usally next morning wet sand with 1500 or 2000 and buff.

ok...has anyone recleared just the panals that were painted?????????i've been wet sanding the entire vehicle and reshooting clear over the entire vehicle....lets say the flames are on the hood and sides but stop at the doors...would the quarter panels still match the front of the vehicle if i just recleard the hood and doors? Im using ppg paint and clear coat. I would like to save my customers money by not sanding the box (i live in an area with mostly trucks cause of winter, north dakota)..i want to give my customers the best deal i can but still do quatlity work.

by reclearing a panel you also get more depth in the paint more than the others will have no matter how much you clean them up

Most of the time you can do it in panels, but there are times you can get a difference. Some colors like bright pearls and metallics will look more brilliant and an older vehicle can give you a gloss difference.I would explain this to the customer and give them a price on just doing the flames and clearing that area.Have a price worked out to clear the rest of the vehicle just in case. Then it's up to them.If there is a difference they can have you scuff and clear the rest for the extra.Just remember to take into account the extra taping the second time,so that might get them to do it all at once for a savings.
