Flames over enamel - what would you do?

Hey All, I'm a new poster here but I've been lurking, reading & learning from y'all for awhile now. Now I would like to draw on your combined experience & expertise to help me decide how to aproach my project.

First, I'm working on a very large surface (a'71 Suburban). I painted it last summer; Fire Engine Red PPG (Omni) Acrylic Enamel w/high gloss hardener. I'm wanting to do traditional flames and am considering airbrushing the rebel flag fading into flames.

Now, my questions: What paint should I use? Should I use enamel or could a basecoat be used? If sanding and a basecoat will work do I need to sand the entire thing to clear it all? The paint has never been waxed but is a year old and driven daily. Also, will a clear help smooth over minor paint flaws?

P.S. Scott, thanks for building your site in a way that is so useful to so many. Your work looks outstanding.

I have no experience with the Omni system but heard you can get good results with it.I don't know what base /clear system to use on it,but I'm sure there's something if you can't do it in Omni.Since you're going to have to clear the grafix, sand the whole thing and clear it all since you will see a difference.

If you go base/clear, you'll have to rough the entire surface to be cleared. 400 grit will give you enough tooth. Even though you haven't waxed, be certain to go over entire area with wax and grease remover BEFORE sanding. I use Omni almost exclusively, and have found naptha is a cheap alternative to remover, and have never had a problem. Your probably better of staying with the Omni. (the main difference between Omni and the real PPG line are colors--not as many options with the base. The difference is really in the clears--more UV protectors in the PPG than Omni. You can use Omni base with the PPG clear, but I've had great luck with the Omni.
