Flat Black Question

It's been a while since I've posted. I am looking for a good flat black paint. I have been told by more than 1 person that SEM makes a good product. Any thoughts?

I believe you are talking about SEM Hot Rod black.
I've never used it, but I've seen cars painted in it. Looks like a nice sheen to it!

I have checked all the local suppliers around here and it costs about $100 per quart (not including catalyst and reducer). Is that in the right ballpark as far as flat single stage urethanes go?

Do you want something good or do you want something cheap?

I'm not sure what auto supply stores you have local to you

Around here either Napa auto or and tractor supply should carry

John Deere Blitz Black

always covered and sprayed very well for me and its about the cheapest around here for single stage

Are you painting an entire vehicle? Why did you decide to go with single stage?

Looks like you can buy the complete kit for about $60.
That price they quoted you probably was for a "kit", not just the black.

Honestly, I just figured that single stage would be easiest. I am not dead set on it though. I really don't know much about flat stuff. This will be my first time using it. I am painting my entire truck... so what should I use?

TAZ -- thanks for the link. Does that SEM flat black cover pretty good? How many quarts do you think it'd take to paint a full size pick up truck?

Also, I want to do some ghost work over the flat black... but I want to use that AXIS Atomic glow in the dark stuff. Can you clear over that stuff or would that just block all the UV that charges the glow in the dark paint?

Thanks for the help guys.

@paxhc, where you saying the SEM was the "good" part or the "cheap" part of your question?

@4pointo
I can't help you out on the glow in the dark paint. I know that this does not last long. It eventually washes out.

If you do plan on putting flames on, I would just suggest going with a basecoat/clearcoat paint. Just use a flattening agent in the clearcoat. This will make both the base and the flames flat.

napa can put flattening agent in any of their single stage paint. Martin senior is the brand, you'll also need the hardner and reducer for it. i used it on my Flat is good post in the pinstipe sections. it was called black out and it was a single stage martin senior paint, and it held up great and cleaned up great!

should be around 60 bux a quart and hardner is around 60 bux a pint and then reducer (don't quote me thought?). the reduction is 8:4:1 if i remember correctly.

kustom shopz has a nice single stage flat with lots of color choices, and real nice to shoot. i tried the flattening agents for clear and didnt find one that i liked how it handled. now there are alot of choices out there for flat clear and thats the way to go, more consistant than adding the agents. i get kustom shopz from tpcglobal.com

So I have a question, I've been using PPG Flexed and Flat I think (DCU2060). What do you guys do about lil crap falling into the clear, since you can't cut and buff the parts?

We always end up redoing the parts that have the dirt in them. Don't know what else to do
