fluid tip size and epoxy primer

Alright I have read everything from 1.3 to 2.2 most say 1.5 or 1.8 fluid tip when spraying primer. I just bought shopline epoxy jp371 and got a new flg4 spray gun primer set that only came with 1.8 and 2.2 fluid tip so do I need to order a 1.5 now to spray primer, just makes no sense that devilbiss finishline would sell a primer gun set with 2 tips that arent the most popular to sray primer. Can I spray this with the 1.8 or do I need to order a 1.5 tip now? so what size do some of you spray primer with?

thanks

1.8 will spray unreduced epoxy and urethane primers fine as stated above.
For primer sealer (if by chance you choose to apply) you could use a 1.5.
I use my top coat guns with a 1.3 or 1.4 tip if I primer seal. Thought I would throw that in FYI.

That's the right tip set (1.8-2.2) for that gun IMO. I only use my two FLG guns for priming. That is where they work best.
If you topcoat with that gun, and I hope you aren't, you are gonna want 1.3 or 1.4.

nope got it for primer only, gotta a tekna chrome for clear. so you think the shopline epoxy will be fine on the 1.8, they recommend 1.6 at the biggest and told me I would have problems. Curious as to why no top coat with this gun, only cause of tip size or just dont like it for base n clear? thanks

If ya got the 1.5 coming try it in a test panel and decide. Shoot it at a higher setting and a lower. Say 29 and 23 psi. Then you will have a better idea.
On top coat an HVLP will not atomize as fine as other type guns meaning more peel.
They work best on primer and do fine with base. you save on material when applying base which id =s good also. But.....when it comes to smooth clear your best bet is gonna be RP and Compliant.

The 1.8 will work fine for primer (I take it you are spraying epoxy primers)
You will need to control how it lays on the primer though.
The less orange peel in the primer, the less sanding and the less you will be taking off.

You 'should' use a 1.3-1.4 for base and clear.
This way it atomizes both better than a larger tip
Remember, you are looking to spray the base nice and flat as possible. You want your metallics to atomize nicely.
You also want to spray your clear with minimal orange peel, so those are the best tips for this.
You could use the 1.8, but you will be fighting both the base and the clear.

I started painting back in the 80's with a Binks 7 and the larger tips.
I used to use a tip I called the 'production tip', which had 2 of the 4 holes on the nozzle in a different location which gave even a larger fan (approx 15").
You could do a door on about 4 passes...lol
Wouldn't want to use it on today's paints. No problem using it on the primers though.

my dad used to use a bink gun with that tip or one like it while spraying dash boards at fords, he tells me only couple passes and dash were all done and some of them were a pretty good size. Still hard to believe he would spray for 2.5-3 hours at a time without a break 3 x a night. thanks man I appreciate your help! I have sprayed base n clear before and I love both of my other guns, I just didnt wanna pay a ton for a primer gun because I might only use it a handful of times a year and heard the flg4 was a good gun, I should of bought the master set with alll 4 tips but oh well Im at $180 with the gun and 3 tips now 1.5, 1.8 and 2.2

Yep, that must be the same tip.
I started out painting for "Econo".
My record was 23 cars in one day. That day, I had the supervisor drive the cars in, and another person driving them out for me. All I did was blow, tack and paint. I would mix the paint while they moved the cars. All single stage paint of course (Fuller O Brian - Nason)
My normal was about 10 a day. Those were the days

==================

You'll be fine with that gun!
