I've searched the threads and read quite a bit about sealing around gas fillers on tanks but I didn't find anything solid about painting around a flush mounted cap. Obviously, you need to run the paint all the way to the top edge of the filler otherwise you'd see it. So that's what I did. I ran my paint (base and kandy) all the way to the edge. I taped the inside of the filler off so no paint would go down in the filler at all. Especially since the fit is so tight around the cap. Any bit that would creep around the tape edge, I'd sand out flush again. I have a slight chamfer now around the filler edge and then it goes to bare steel as soon as it turns south into the filler hole. Last night, we did our final clear and I dropped the tape line down about 1/8" into the filler hole so the clear would seal the edge of the filler. Did I do the right thing? Is gas going to play hell with the clear there? It's house of kolor UC-1 clear. That stuff is pretty tough but I still have concern. Should I have used clear nail polish? Please advise.
Thanks,
Josh
