For all the PPG experts

Hey guys, hopefully this will be another quicky.

Been looking at PPG stuff and decided to try it this time around instead of HOK.

The question is this....

What basecoat systems do you guys use, and why?

So far I've found DBC, DBU, BC, and MBC.

This will only be the second bc/cc job I've done, so I only know two things. Diddly and squat.

Thanks yet again...

Mojo - I use both when I paint - mostly PPG for base coats and grafix - I can get just a few ounces of this or that instead of buying a Qt. of some color I'll never use. I prefer the DBU bases, they are "reactice" when mixed with the reducer. They seem to hold up better to scuffing and unmasking - things like that - I will also mbuy just the DMD toners and the 695 balancing clears and mix my own colors for airbrushing and laying down graphics. When you buy DBU colors they come with 50% color or toners (DMD) and the other 50% is 695 Balancing clear, sometimes I will mix only 15% - 20% 695 with my toners so I won't have a big tape edge. As far as the clears go, I was a huge fan of HOK's UFC-40 - the stuff covered great and I only had to do a little sanding caused but tape edges, but they quit selling it in the US, I've tried the UFC-35 comply clear but it's not nearly as good. The last time down to my local PPG supplier, He was telling me about the PPG Global clear and it being a 50% solid (which is better then anything HOK has out) and that it would be great for covering up grafix... He gave me a Qt. with reducer and hardener, but I haven't shot it yet - plan to this weekend to see how it works. In my quests for the best materials for my needs I've found that HOK's bases lay down quicker than PPG, and hold up pretty good compared to the DBU's. As far as airbrushing though - I'm starting to change over to HOK just because their pigments seem more fine and when reduced down for my Iwata, they seem to hold their chroma and hue well - I really can't say that for the PPG -- I think you'll be cool either way - or even using both, I have found that PPG seems to be a bit more expensive -- Peace - Bones!~

Bones- post your results with the PPG clear. I have been looking for a good replacement for the UFC-40. All the tree hugging hippies are ruining our paint.

Hey Twisted! I'm a tree hugging hippy and I love clears. It doesn't leave a colored ring around your mouth when your huffing it.
Ok, ok, I'm only kidding.

Seriously, Thanks for the advice Bones. It's amazing how complicated this stuff can be to a newbie. And the advice from you guys really saves a lot of time. Not to mention some serious moolah. I love to experiment. But not at 30-50 bucks a quart.

I believe I'm going to attempt a Pearl Gun Metal Grey with some smoke flake tossed in to really screw with my head.

If you want to experiment without the cost of a quart of paint there are some places online that sell smaller amounts. I'm not sure of the web sites but maybe someone on the board knows what I'm talking about.
