Ghost Flame Question #2

Is it necessary to put down a coat of interclear over my base coat before I lay out the flames or can I tape the flames right over the base coat and then clear it all at once??

If your b/c is a metallic, pearl, or flake, then yes. You need to put some clear on. If you don't you risk (for no reason) pulling off your b/c with your tape.
Now, if your using a solid graphic color, then you can chance it. I've done it in the past with success, but have done it many, many times with failure.
Play it safe....it will save you time in the end.

He is right, but it also helps to "deaden" The tape by putting it across your shirt before masking it down.

I would not recommend this with flames, though, as some of the curves are really tight and you need all the stick you can get.

I like to use some sort of clear in between, just because most of the time I don't have enough time to doo the base and the graphics all at the same time. I mostly work on cars, though...........

I think alienboy meant that when you pull off the tape without interclear (or any base clear), you will 'distrupt' the basecoat (not pull it off...if you pull off the basecoat, you have an adhesion problem). I tried this once without interclear on a HOK metallic bascoat, and it left the basecoat, but it removed quite of bit of the metallic. HOK BC basecoats have a bigger metallic in them, so this made. quite a difference.
Play it safe..metalllics, yes, solid colors, you should be able to get by without it.

Thanks for the feedback, I thought this was the case. I am just getting back into custom paints after a 30 years absence (to get a job and support my family)I am recently retired from Diamler-Chrysler and now have time to have some fun. I know many guys make their living doing this and don't consider it fun but in my case, it is. We were doing kandy and metal flakes back in the late 50's, when it first came out on the East coast. It was fun then and it will be fun again with some help from my friends on this forum. Thanks for your help.

Syracuse, New York was host to the "Syracuse Nationals" last weekend, 7000 cars, great show. Lots of wild paint. I had a long conversation with the PPG rep, he suggested that I apply a coat of DBC 500 blending clear over my base coat before I layout the flames then add the pearl to DBC 500 and spray the ghost flames and finish with a finish clear top coat. Does that make sense or am I just making more work for myself??
