I want to have some deep/dark purple flames on my cobra, starting with the front end and rnning back along the doors, wii this work, wet sand the whole car with 1000 grit, then mask the flames, then mask aroudn the flames, then spray a basecoat of a dark purple, then unmask the flames, then re clear the whole car with 8101 fast clear, wii that work ?? I think it should, im using PPG Global.... And i do want the the ghost flames look, i want them barely noticeable....my friend has a 999 Grand Prix that he did, he used the harlequinn, he did what i stated above, and it turned out awesome....please tell me if that will work

Yes, that will work, but let me give you a couple of suggestions.
Only sand the panels that you are going to flame. Then tape off those panels as though you are going to paint them (in other words don't wetsand or prep the complete car). Mask off your flames, then take some of the PPG Global "violet pearl" toner (has a purple hue), and have your local paint shop mix you up a pint of the 895 baseclear and the violet pearl toner (1 to 1), and use this as your flame paint. Then you will reduce this mixture 1 to 1 with reducer

Only put on about 2 coats!!!! You will not even notice it against the paper, but once you compare it against straight black (pull back a little peace of tape after each), there will be quite a difference. I would strongly suggest doing a couple of test panels before doing the real deal.

Keep in mind to, that when you clear it, it even makes the pearl against the black stand out even more.

Once you are done spraying the flames, pull off only the flame masking paper, this will leave you with the panels you had taped off for clear. You are now ready to clear.

Why wouldnt i wan tto do this as you stated "Painted in a dark blue pearl (Code L2 Ford), then sprayed blue toner pearl for the flames to give it a ghost effect. Looks excellent whether under fluorescent, shade or in the sun., why should i use 895 Baseclear instead of the blue toner pearl ?????

Hello,
Not for sure if I understand you, but you want to make sure that you do mix both the 895 and also the blue (or violet pearl) together. This will be your flame color. This is the same way I did the flame job that you mentioned.

I see what your saying, i am doing this next week, i will let you know how it turns out with some photos, i am thinking of waiting like a week to see if the paint shrinks, just to be safe, so in the pics it wont be buffed but what the hey, i just want something a little differnt, i paint at a local body shop here so Im experienced, but have never shot ghost flames

Scott, Would I sand the entire hood , fenders and doors, or just the areainside the taped off flame? Will the clear look the same on the rest of the car if I only clear the front over the flames or will I have to buff the entire car to get an overall original finish? thanks, Russ
