I currently have a honda civic with blue/purple pearl ghost flames. the car's base color is corvette blue. I really like the one bike you did that had a set of transparant, silver flames over the blue. I was wondering... you said you used your own aluminum/white pearl mix. I'm not familiar with house of kolors, but i was wondering if you could tell me how you make that color?? when doing flames over top of each other should I clearcoat between the sets?? last, what type of gun and size tip do you use for outlining those flames?? airbrush??

Jeff -- The pearl is a powder that's mixed into a clear (Like HOK's SG100) After you have laid out and masked your flames you shoot this mix in. Now the thing with ghost flames is everyone has their own mix and spraying technic. For instance, Scott uses a mixure of aluminum and white pearl, mixed fairly strong and sprays toward the outside of the flame, this gives the flame a nice bright edge that fades into the base color which gives the overall design an elegant look with a bit of attitude(sorry - I had to add that!!).

If you've never shot flames - then YES - shoot some clear between the seperate flames - this will give you "opps" freedom - If ya screw it up you can wipe or sand the mistake off -

You can probably get away with a tip as small as 1.2 -- I have a small Gravity fed touch-up gun with this size tip and I can use it for metallics, pearls, opaque bases and for all of my clearing and it works fine -- Go get some sign blanks and try out some different mixes and spraying technics and see what you come up with!!
Good Luck!! Bones!~

yes,I've done the flames many times before,I use my sata mini-jet and that works pretty good for outlining flames. I have the flames done now in blue and purple pearl. I was thinking about doing them in candy blue, then lay another set overtop and doing that set in the aluminum/white pearl mix. For the candy blue ghost flames....do you outline the flames with the aluminum/white mix down first, then the blue candy over it?? I don't prefer using the powder pearls because when mixed with clear, after you outline the flames your stuck with a thick edge to bury. I use sikkens at my shop and their pearls are liquid and look just as nice.

If thats what works for you than use it -- Everyone has their own preferences own paints and kandies and clear with a million different technics for application. After you spray your pearl mix then you want to kandy it --- Bones!~
