Ghosting over old paint

Hay ya'll. New to borad but have a question. I had my bike painted about a month , 6 wks ago. It is still perfect with no scratches or anything. Problem is the flames are too loud, bright, really stick out. I would like to put a coat of transparent candy apple to ghost the flames. How hard and what do I need to do as far as how to sand and put a coat or two on?
Ant ideas.
Thanks!! callover007 /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

What I would do is first make sure your parts are very clean than color sand with 600 grit, wash with wax and grease remover spray on a couple coats of candy or as many as it takes to get the look your looking for than top clear. Wait at least a day to color sand and buff and you should be set. You could also start by color sanding with a finer sandpaper like 800 or 1000, but you will need to use an adhesive promoter before spraying. May I ask what color is your bike and what color are the flames? I do highly suggest doing all this on a test panel first. Just get any old piece of flat metal and paint it half with the color of your bike and the color of the flames on the other half than candy it all. This way you will get a good idea what it would look like without experimenting on your bike.

Thanks for the reply. The bike is candy apple red, silver base, with candy kobal blue flames, alot of them. They are pin stripped with a light blue. It really stands out but I think it's too bright. Need to tone it down while it's still new with no marks.
I'll try 600 and maybe 2 coats, by a professional, not me, and then 2 or 3 clear coats. What do you mean by color sand?

Color sanding means wet sanding. It's an old term from back in the lacquer days where you'd put on 3 or 4 coats and sand it,throw on a few more coats,sand,etc.etc. untill you got to the point you sanded and buffed it.More of a slang term today.

Sorry for not responding sooner, but Rex is right, color sanding is just slang for wet sanding. Thanx Rex. Any way, let us know how it turns out. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bigokay.gif

I just want to threw my 2 cents in & I know what Rex is saying is accurate, but how I've read it and heard the term "color sanding" being used in today's Urathane system is when you have to sand a minor imperfection out of a base coat paint...like sanding a nib out of a solid color & then clearing it. As for wetsanded I've heard it used for the clearcoat deal only. Just some input of how I've heard the terms used, not saying there's a right or wrong in use /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/freak.gif

Oh yeah! forgot to ask what color is your bike currently?
Please tell me that you will disassemble your bike first & do you have any experience with painting, especially Kandy's?

If you do have experience, let us know what color your bike and the flames are. What exactly you want to happen to the flames etc.

If you do NOT have experience with painting and especially spraying kandy's contact a bike painter
(i.e. customflamepainting.com) & get them to do it. It may cost you more to get the equipment to spray and material than to have a painter put a coat of two on and then clear. Also you do not want to really mess you current paintjob if you aren't sure how to spray kandy. I'm unsure of what your knowledge is, or what equipment you have access too.
