gloss murals over flat paint

I'm trying to do my base coat in either a flat white or a flat silver but i want to paint murals and have them cleared does anyone know if this is possible without tapeing the murals leaving hard lines... Another concern i have is the road grime staining the white base since flat paint is normally textured

Most of the 'flat' or satin jobs I've done are not textured. They are 'flat' in both gloss and texture. The only way I see you being able to do this is to spray the base, spray your mural...then spray the clear coat with the flattening agent in it. Then buff the area of where the mural is.

Hmmm, thats a tough one. But you can do the base flat, then frame the mural, mask off the rest of the tank and aply your gloss clear. Or you can do as Tax suggested.

the only problem with doing the paint in two steps is the difference in height of the clears i'm trying to do this without pinstripe covering the hard lines

ok let me ask this do you sand and buff the clear with the flattening agent and if so isn't that still going to make the gloss mural flat? is there a way to put the flattening agent in the paint so i could lay the base in flat first then do a normal gloss on top?

As far as your first reply, you wouldn't mask up the area. You would carefully paint and blend the area around it. The only problem with this is you'll probably end up with overspray on the flat area.

As far as your recent reply, when you buff paint, it will bring the shine out (remember, when you wetsand before buffing, it is dull and you still bring the shine out)
I was unsure what you meant in your second question about spraying the base flat then adding gloss clear over it.

there are certain single stage paints that can be cleared over, so in theory, you could lay the white base, do your mural in the single stage then flat clear the entire thing, flat clear over gloss single stage should end up with a semi-shine??

just thinking out loud
