Got a few ???\'s on Candy colors

I will soon be repainting my 67 Camaro, and I am considering using candy colors for the first time.

I have heard that you need to "walk" the car when painting candys to keep from having different color panels. The thing is, I am goint to probably have the car aprat when it is painted. It has a fiberglass one piece front end (removable hood) and glass doors. The front edge of the doors has a flange that goes behind the front fenders, and the front end has a flange that the hood sits on.

To make matters worse, I was going to paint the top candy orange and the sides candy (or Pearl) blue. with some graphics in between.

Is this going to prove too difficult to do all apart? Should I jamb it out and then paint the rest of the car assembled?

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I have done several overall jobs, but never a candy color. if I shouldn't even try, in your opinion, let me know.

Also, what HOK candy is recommended, as I know there a couple different types.

Re: Got a few ???\'s on Candy colors

The biggest thing with a candy is technique and consistency. If you are a very confident painter, you shouldn't have a problem. If the car was together then yes you would want to walk the length of it, but thats mainly because of overlap. As long as you can keep your technique the same on the parts that are unbolted you shouldn't have a problem. There is only one way to get good spraying kandy's, and thats to do it. So if its your own car I would go for it, no time like the present to learn.

For your first time shooting candies and the car in pieces I'd suggest using the HOK candy basecoats. Gotta be alot easier and less headaches.

LUDI, I WOULD SUGGEST USING A COLOR LIKE HOC SUNSET PEARL(PBC31) OR TANGELO PEARL (PBC32) AS A BASE FOR YOUR CANDY TOPCOAT.THIS WILL STILL GIVE YOU A RICH DEEP CANDY GLOW BUT HELP YOUR COLOR MATCH BY KEEPING THE # OF CANDY COATS DOWN.

IF YOU NEED MORE SPARKLE IN YOUR BASE SHOOT A COUPLE COATS OF PC1(SILVER PEARL) OVER THE BASE.

AND TO BE SURE YOU WILL ACHIEVE THE COLOR YOUR LOOKING FOR SHOOT A TEST PANEL FIRST.

Re: Got a few ???\'s on Candy colors

Thanks for all the good advice, guys!

Specifically though, what paint should I ask HOK for? I know there is KBC and Urethanes, one is supposed to be a little user friendly than the other. What is the difference and which one would suit my application best?

I am aware of test panels, as I have a ton of different color pearls and have done a lot of ghost graphics for people.......

Re: Got a few ???\'s on Candy colors

LUDI YOU GOT ME HERE ,I LOOKED IN A HOC TECH MANUAL AND FOUND KBC SHIMRIN KANDY BASECOATS. I HAD NEVER HEARD OF THEM. I ALWAYS USE THE KANDY KONCENTRATE IN EITHER SG100 OR WHATEVER URETHANE I'M TOPCOATING WITH.

THE KBC COULD BE THE TICKET FOR WHAT YOUR DOING. SOUNDS LIKE THEY SPRAY AS EASY AS THE SHIMRIN BASES.

I'M GETTIN A COUPLE OF QTS MONDAY TO SEE HOW THEY LOOK.

THANKS DAVE

P.S. I HAVE USED HOC URETHANE CANDY AND ITS NICE BUT IT NEEDS TO BE SPRAYED IN PRISTINE CONDITIONS, BECAUSE IT STAYS TACKY WAY LONGER THAN KK MIXED WITH SG100.

Re: Got a few ???\'s on Candy colors

ludacris the differences in the lettering doesnt effect the color you have the diffeence is one has to have reducer and catalyst the other only needs reducer they are the same color and produce the same effect just one is less material.
hope that helps
