H-D anniversary medallions

Okay...what's the scoop on these. I had heard that you could exchange a used set for a new set. Now the H-D dealer is telling me that you have to buy a painted tank to... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif What happens if someone gets one of these medallions scraped? They have to buy a new tank to??? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif

I have 2 used sets. Anyone know what they use for the tape on the back of these. *very* thick and very sticky.

What happened to all the sets on e-Bay? I just checked...zero, nada, nothing coming up on e-Bay. I know they were going for $200-$300 used (some new to). Funny though...the dealer told me that I could buy the new set for $150, but I had to buy a painted tank to and also have those emblems installed on it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif (I knew someday I could put that Graemlin to good use! Don't know what the heck he's doing, but it sure seemed fitting for this post /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif )

i was told you can purchase them proving ownership of an anniversary bike ( vin check) and you had to surender 1 in order to get 1 ( like an exchange program) i would talk to another dealer sounds like that parts department is trying to boost sales for the month /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif and take you for a ride in the process.

Scott, you should be able to use 3M emblem mounting tape. I'm not sure if Harley uses 3M or Norton or if it's an acrylic or urethane adhesive. In my past life I worked with automotive emblems and tapes for 29 yrs. Your local jobber should have a selection of emblem mounting tapes. Good luck, TC

TC,
Actually, I did use the 3M double sided tape, but this was just too thin. The tape has to be about 1/8" thick to take up any gaps in the emblems, or the emblems have to be absolutely perfectly shaped to fit the contour of the tank...and if they are used and have been pried off, chances are pretty slim. They're pretty thick to try to bend back into shape.
I will check that out further....
Thanks to both of you!

Scott, 1/8" is pretty thick for automotive emblem tape. About the thickest we used for GM/Ford/Nissan etc. was .060". We did, on occation, for samples "layer" the tape to build up to a specific thickness for prototypes. Just a thought, good luck. TC

On the 100th anniversary models (with the medallions), they have the "original" factory paint colors used. So....if HD doesn't have it on record that you purchased a bike with the original color paint (or special design), they won't trade the medallions for new ones unless you buy the tank that the medallion came on. They are trying to protect the models--otherwise anyone can stick a medallion on a tank and call it an anniversay model. Hubby has a black/silver anniversay model and he needs touch up paint (for a small chip on frame--rocks!). They did not have it available and said he was the first to ask for touch up--they would have to special order it. When he asked for it, his bike was there for an oil change. It's kind of sad that they weren't nicer to you and explained the situation........

Blizzard,
You mentioned that your hubby needed touch up paint for the frame? Since this is powdercoated, you should be able to use a regular black enamal or single stage color to fill the chip up?
Hope they didn't hit you to hard on the $

Thanks for the post...looks like I will try to use the "used" good anniv. emblems I have. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif

Well, we didn't get the paint because they didn't have it right then and there (we were looking for convenience). We are going to use some that we already purchased for another paint job (from a local shop). It's just a tiny ding and you don't notice it unless you are looking for it, but, hey....it's his baby!! Although, like you, we are curious how much they would charge!!

Stick that emblem on good and tight--you won't believe how popular they've become!!! If you're still wanting to know the size of the tape, I can measure one for you....let me know.
