hand brushed detail edge over SG-100?

It seems like in the past I have sprayed my basecoat, masked off and sprayed flames, then sprayed a coat or 2 of HOH SG-100 intercoat clear, and then mixed up some basecoat (PPG DBC) and hand brushed an edge over the outline, with no problems. Does this sound right??? Of course, after all that's done, then it gets 2 or 3 coats of clear.......

You're hand striping right?Sounds good, the only prob I can see is if the edge shows thru the stripe since it wasn't leveled out first, but I can't stripe so I don't know if it would melt out and not show.

yes, hand striping. The problem I had just the other day is I sprayed the basecoat, then the flames, then a coat of clear PPG 2021 (with some accelerator) The next day, I scuffed it up, and when I mixed up some more basecoat color (1:1) and used the brush over the flame edges, it "crinkled" the clearcoat under the detail line. I found that giving that first coat of clear 2 days to dry/cure (instead of 1) seemed to take care of the problem. It seems like I had a week or 2 ago sprayed the SG100 over my base and flames, waited an hour, then had brused some 1:1 detail edge, THEN cleared it all with 2021, and had no problems, but i can't recall for sure if that's the way it all played out........

An edge will usually show if you don't level out the clear. With the crinkling problem, it's the catalyst from the clear eating into that basecoat you're using for pinstriping. I have found that using basecoat paint for pinstriping hasn't worked for me. Also I use HoK striping paint and add a drop of their catalyst (you can had a drop of your clearcoats catalyst) to the reducer I dip my brush in to keep the pinstripe from crinkling on me. Especially if I will be adding clear over it in an hour or two. If you pinstriping w/o catalyst and give it awhile to dry before clearing you shouldn't have an issue. I still like to add that drop of catalyst though to keep the scuffed clear from eating into the striping paint. Waiting two days, when time permits for the clear to cure before stripping probably won't hurt.

I have a cup of catalyst/reducer & a cup of plain reducer for cleaning when I stripe. Make sure your brush is cleaned well after use. The catalyst can hardner on the hairs and ruin your brush if not.

BD,try using 2042 when you use up the 2021,it's faster drying and will probably not wrinkle the next day.Another thing I do if it's hot is do everything in 2042 and do the last flowcoats in 2021 if I have the extra time to let it sit and dry.The 42 won't quite lay as nice as the 21 but you're sanding it anyway.

it's interesting you mention that, I hadn't thought about that! I used to use 2042, and somehow got to using the 2021.....

OK, I sprayed the base coat, layed out my designs, sprayed the second coat for the designs areound the edge, taped off for a marblized strip up the center, pulled all the tape off, shot some SG100 on it that afternoon, used a brush and did my hand painted detail lines around my designs/graphics and the marblized stripe, then shot clear over it all, and it worked like a JOY! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/yay.gif The 1:1 basecoats (reduced like 1 - .25 so the paint would be "thicker") worked like a charm as a detail paint! No "bleed through to the basecoats becuase I was going over the top of the SG100 with the detail paint! Cool! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/agree.gif
