I want to paint a bike with the flat black paint, also called black denim paint. like Harley uses. is it clear with flattner in it? my local dealer doesn't know much, like usual.

can anyone here tell me what to use?

i think it's a flattend acrylic enamel. that's what i use for flat. works well.

thanks hoss, so its just bc/cc with flatner in it? how much flattner did you put in the ones you painted, they look great.

We use R&M at work, the clear seems soft compared to other clears. what do you all think is the toughest clear to use? and still be user friendly.

no it's not bc/cc, it's a single stage paint w/ flattening agent in it. i'd start w/ 35% flattening agent to your acrylic enamel. you'll have to use a hardner in it b/c of the flattening agent.

i use martin senor paint and the flat i used is premixed. it's like 5 parts flattening to 6parts acrylic enamel. you definitly have to put hardner in it, but it's good and flat and durable. just go around to your local paint supply places and ask if they have any flat paint and ask them how much flattening agent they add.

as for clearcoats. i use House of Color, it seems to be the most forgiving and lays out nice and i've not had problems w/ passenger seats putting indentions in the paint b/c it's not hard enough. but there are many great clearcoats out there.

The acrylic with flattening agent does work great. I've used it several times, twice on harley's. The only suggestion I have is, I sprayed a test panel, if its not flat enough add a little more flattening. Also, I was told to add the acrylic hardner at a 32:1 ratio, reason being, the hardner works against the flattening agent for shine. Sounds hard to belive and resembles that of your dirt bike gas mixture but it took a little longer to harden but the results are great.

Can you use flattener in the HOK clear ??

I'd like to try a denim/camo job, but I'd like to clear coat it for toughness without giving it any gloss.

flattend clear makes a different effect than a flattend single stage paint. it's got a milkiness to it. i think HOK and also Kustom shop has a flat clear already
