Helmet Prep??

I am very new to painting but have done a few complete helmets already. They were beat up so they had to start from the primer level. My question is with a new helmet, if it is solid black can you scuff it and then start you graphic? I have heard that the clear on helmets need to be sealed with a primer sealer before you can apply more paint. By the way I have been using HOK paint. Thanks!

That's usually what I do if the original paint is brand new, just scuff, do my graphics then clear. But I'm kind of new at it too, so you might want one of the pro's advice.

Thanks KevsLX, this process seemed to work well for you? I think I am going to go for it! Unless someone else has knowledge on this we don't know. Thank you for the response.

Sorry,I can't help you in this field.Any helmet I've owned had serious marks on it.Dirtbike helmets are a complete waste of $ unless you're always in front and never fall.Looking at mine scares me sometimes.I don't care about my street helmets because it's easier to slap a sticker over the marks than touch it up (from being knocked over and dropping it,not hitting pavement).Hell,as long as I don't feel the need to wear it or am required to I don't.Then again I prefer to hear the scooter to catch a noise early.Yeah,iI know,it's American Iron.

Thanks Rex, I feel the same way about my helmets, but I found someone that feels they need this prefectly beautiful black helmet painted. Go figure? But, I will take his money!!!
Thanks for the reply.

Actually sorry,I had quite a few brews after work and rambled.I suppose 600 wet or even finer would be fine.I can't disagree with your logic though, money's money
