Help a bad paint job please.

I have 2013 Ford Escape that got two really bad door dings in it at a theme park. One was deep scratches to point where paint was chipping off and the other was scratches and small dent. I filed a claim with my insurance and took my car to their approved shop that actually has a rep on site to take of the claim and then it goes straight to be fixed in the shop. I really wanted this fixed because my car is literally brand new with out a scratch on it. The shop repaired the ding and repainted front and rear drivers side doors. This is where the problems began.

After I got the car home I noticed that there was a a bubble of paint that was in between the 2 doors like a bubble formed that linked the two door edges and it dried then broke when the doors where opened it was very rough sharp so I to it back to them. They determined that it was a pieces of masking tape that was painted over and not removed. They where able to remove the tape and smooth down the area. I waited while they did this. Then approximately 2 weeks later I started noticing small bubbles in the paint. They where tiny but all over. You could feel them with you hands but could not see them in direct sunlight. Almost like they where below the clear. I also noticed a rather significant run in the paint below the door handle also, I had missed it before and 2 bigger deeper bubbles on one the doors. The 2 deeper bubbles are larger and you see the paint rising up off the car. I would describe these are traditional paint bubbles. So I took it back to them again they said they wet sanded the entire painted area to get rid of the bubbles and the run in the paint. So after getting it back the run is gone and I can now see definite sand paper paper scratches in the paint where the run was. They are faint but you can easily see them. The 2 larger bubbles are still there and just as obvious and the tiny bubbles that where all over the place are now smooth but still visible almost like you are looking at them through the clear coat but can't feel them. Also now there are areas around the door handles that have whatever thy used to polished the car caked on and its really rough. Looks like what happen when you leave wax on car in the sun. The obviously did not remove the door handles to do the sanding and polishing. So returning again for a 4th time.

My question is what do I tell the shop needs to be done to fix these problems correctly, does the paint need to be completely removed and re-done. I think it needs to be because I think the tiny bubbles are solvent pop from pictures I have seen online. I know they rushed the paint also. I dropped my car off at 8:00 AM and it was ready at 4:00 PM same day. This included the the dent repair and repaint all done in the same day. And its not simple paint is an escape titanium with blue flecks in the paint. I am going to take it to another shop to get an opinion of what is wrong with paint. The only saving grace is that because I took it to the insurance approved shop it has a lifetime warranty on it so they have never given me any hassle when I take it back and the paint shop has its own lifetime warranty on top that. I am just at the point now where I think I need to find a different paint shop and have insurance pay them to have it done right.

I fear that I will never get it back to factory quality paint its gone from bad to worse. The insurance adjuster has been super nice about all this and apologized emphatically, but the shop just does half ass work. I can't understand how someone could be proud/OK with the quality of this work. I have an untrained eye for paint and I can see these issues easily. Please help me with recommendations thank you.

Too bad this all happened to you. When you took it back and you mentioned they repainted it, it sounds like they did not. Sounds like they just wetsanded and buffed it.
Which is what the 'faint' scratches are where the run was. They just didn't buff out the scratches enough.

It will definitely need to be repainted. If that is solvent pop, then they will at least have to sand past all the bubbles.

I would definitely tell the insurance adjuster to recommend another shop as this is not working out and you've given the first shop enough chances to get it right. A small job like this shouldn't have taken more than once, twice at the very most.
Hope it all works out for you

Taz,

Thanks for the reply. You are right, when I took it back for the third time and I assumed to be repainted, they called and said it was ready and said they did not need to repaint it to fix the problems that a wet sand had fixed everything. It obviously did not. I also took it to another paint shop down the road from my work yesterday. Just to get a second opinion and he said it would need to be repainted also. He was floored when I explained to him what was involved in the initial repair and that they did it all in one day. He said that same repair would have a been 3 days in his shop. He definitely agrees they rushed the paint and that probably led to all of the problems I am having now. Reminds me of the old saying you can polish a turd all you want but its still just a turd. The initial paint job just ruined everything from here on out.

I am taking it back on Monday morning again to talk to the insurance adjuster again and demand it be repainted. She already told me the last time I took it to her for the solvent pop that if repainting was required to fix the problems that they would do it no problem. My insurance company has actually been super nice through out this whole process, heck I wish they had paint guys on staff but they are at the mercy of the shop. What is really a shame is that when I looked up the shop they have really good reviews and stand behind their work. I have a completely separate lifetime warranty on the work from the shop itself. Its like the new guy painted my car or something. I find it hard to believe that everyone that works there does this kind of work. I hope it works out also, I'll keep you guys posted on it. Thank you for your opinion.

I agree, it sounds like a new painter was used on your car. Normally insurance companies choose quality shops to do repairs.

Hope it all works out for you.

Well dropped the car off again. Explained all the current problems in the paint and told the insurance agent that the entire job needs to be redone from scratch to fix all these problems for good. She agreed that is what needed to happen and said that she will personally make sure that it is done correctly and get the shop manager and the owner involved. She said she is so busy usually with being an insurance adjuster that she rarely has time check on repairs after they go off to the shop. She said she will personally inspect the paint job once it has been redone under the shop lights and then when I come in they will have it washed and under the shop lights again for my personal inspection before I take it again. I choose to leave it the original shop because she made it sound like this never happens usually and it is very rare for them to ever get vehicles back with problems. I told they need to take their time this time with paint and not be in a rush and that they need to have their best painter do it. She apologized repeatedly again and said she will personally make sure it is done right. She said she wants to be there when I pick it up to make sure I am satisfied. I have faith that the shop can do it right if they take their time like they should. I think I was just victim of trying to move vehicles through the shop too quickly she said the shop guys are under a lot of pressure to get the jobs done quickly from the insurance company. Well see what happens. I'll keep you posted. Thanks again for your help.

Sounds like she's taking care of it for you. Hope all works out. Be sure and also check it out in the sun before actually taking delivery of the car. It may look good inside, but not outside.
They must have had a new painter. It's seems like a smaller job, so it could have been done correctly in 2-3 days.
Good luck to you.
