I'm trying to restore a 1946 pedal car. I just got it back from the sandblaster and figured I'd treat the bare metal with Metal Treat to get rid of the flash rust. I follow the directions which say to wipe it on and then wash it off. As soon as I do before I can even dry it, it starts to flash rust again. Now it's worse than before I started.

How the hell do I get rid of this rust and keep it that way long enough to bondo and prime???

are you trying to dry it with compressed air? if so it will rust instantly everytime. DA the whole car dowm with 80 grit and that should get rid of the rust . i personally dont use rust treatments they some times are more trouble than they are worth. PPG uses a two part wash , the treatment and a neutralizer, cant tell you the part # or much about them like i said i try to stay away from them.

PPG says that that fine coat of rust can be left and etch primed over, but I wont.I agree with Joe,most of the time metal preps cause you more headaches.

I use a product called ospho, 1 gal.- $15.00 avalible at marine shops & some parts houses. It works well you can spray it on with a empty spray bottle (409 etc.) & wipe off the excess with a clean rag or let it sit a few minutes & wash it off. I've sandblasted a coupe before, applied this stuff and worked on the car for 2 years with no rust reapearing (no primer) but it was stored in a shop, not outside. You need to scocth brite it before you prime.

Ospho (or Phospho-same thing) works great but don't wash it off.Once all the lose rust scale and dust is knocked off you just wet the surface down with a thin even layer and walk away for 24hrs.I've done it in 12 but it depends on the temperature and how wet you put it on,when it's dry the rust will be black and unrusted steel will be a light to dark grey.Scuff it with a red scuffy or buzz over it quick with the DA and it's ready to prime.I've seen it last at least 7 years so far.
