Help spraying a tinted clear over carbon

I want to achieve a lightly tinted effect on my carbon fiber hood, give it a little color but still allow the carbon weave to show through.

Would it be better to spray a "ghost" layer of color and then clear that, or is it safe to mix color with the clear to give the clear a tint?
I would rather not sacrifice durability of the finish in the process.

Any tips or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Hey dude whats up... I did this to my hood on my prelude. What you do is take the paint your gonna use and mix it 25 percent to clear base. It makes a candy. Which over carbon fiber is very nice. Its transparent enough to see all the hood, but enough color to see it and wonder if your trippin or not.

The only problem using clear base is that there is no UV protection, which means it will chalk and the clear base is not durable and very easily damaged. i would throw a little (very little) pearl in some uro clear. HOUSE OF KOLOR EVEN HAS KAMELION PEARL POWDER which is suposed to be pretty kool.

But pretty expensive. if it were my choice i would go with the Kamelion pearl in the uro clear.

You would top coat clear over the clear base. If you Tint the top coat clear and spray it then you will have fairly high build which is something you don't want on a carbon fiber hood. Trust me.

Yeah, but putting the pearl in the uro clear you will get alot more depth out of it.i personaly dont like the way pearls flow in the intercoat clears they are more prone to striping, they dry almost instantly and dont give the pearl time to flow, and if you are going to have problems with 3 coats of uro clear you can count on having the same problems with 2 coats and i would also use the slowest clear i could find on carbon fiber.

Thanks for the info!

I am definetly concerned with UV protection. I have heard about so many CF hoods getting ruined by exposure to UV. I might contact House of Kolor directly to see what they recommend.

There was an article in one of the import mags about color clearing a WRX hood. They layered like 5 coats on it! I'd like to see how that finish holds up with that many layers.

Thanks

More input is still appreciated!

add a small amount of Kandy Koncentrate (KK)to your clear. spay it in the first 1-2 coats depending on the darkness of the color you want then use straight clear over the whole job......good luck
