hey this is my first post here and this is my first very highend paint job, i am however a fairly experiance painter. basically my question boils down to will i have trouble with my clear becuase of paint build up around my striping. here is my planned method

using all HOK

- primer
- white sealer
- paint fine metallic gold the tail, gas tank, and upper faring (street bike)
- tape off gold that i want to keep (using it to sepearte the colors a a little added design
- spary entire bike with 3 coats of BC26 white
- from gold up, paper to keep white
- spray from gold down with 3 coats of black pearl (reccomended)
- remove paper from upper color while leaving gold covered,
- spray intire bike with two coats of 150 intercoat mixed with silver miniflake
- repaper white
- brandywine the black pearl a few coats
- completely untape and prepare for Clear

now that is 5 coats on one side of the gold and 11 or so coats on the bottom of the gold. my concern is that when i remove the tape from the gold that there will be to much buildup to cover with clear smoothly. (albiet kandy has very little build up in my expericance)

what do you guys think? where should i change up at? i dont want to do hand painted pinstripes.

thanks for the read and sorry for the long post.

considering the lower half you will be spraying black pearl it shouldn't take much for full coverage. then when you flake it use lite coats and try to spray down fron the tape line and not into it or directly at it.this goes the same for the candy. On jobs like this I will clear and the 800 down till flat and reclear w/ 2 coats. less buffing and zero lines.
does that make sense?

yes....but im still skeered lol. have you ever had problems with untapeing the kandy?
no you just have to wait a bit longer then your flash time them remove it like you would remove the fineline from anything else. pull tape back over itself and pull down a bit.
just wait till the kandy doesn't string when you touch it. ouch the paper near the last spot sprayed. no string ur good to go.
DON"T RUSH IT!

if you are really worried you could leave the gold pinstripe till last, clear the lot after the white and candy etc are finished then you can scuff out the difference in thickness between the two and then mask the gold off, paint and reclear, i have done this many times on similiar jobs as it avoids any problems, it takes a hell of a lot less time to scuff and reclear a job than to strip, re-repair, reprime and repaint a job. some may dissagree but i have found this quite time saving and i paint custom bikes etc ful time...

i bought an air brush yesterday, im just gonna get som e tape and tape it off and air bursh it and put gold leaf on it, then clear over that. i think gold leaf will look better than just a gold stripe, with the metallic candy.

I would bury any lines of concern with DBC 500 its a clear basecoat that dries fast and it builds like clear primer. Sand with 600 or 800, wichever you ar comfortable with, then clear it. You wont have to wait all night to come back and sand plus its easier to level than clearcoat.
