a candy is a urethane clear with pigment, so it will spray and behave just like uro clear. usally metallic bases are used for an undercoat for candy jobs. its funny there was another post on marbilizing that the poster wanted to marbilize right over sealer not a good idea either

I saw on a Corbin's Ride On episode where one guy put a Kandy on his Valkyrie right over the metal! He had sanded the metal in "swirly" patterns which showed through the transluscent top coat -- it was really cool looking!

However, having said that, the traditional method is to put Kandy over a metallic basecoat. Single color, pearl, metallic, metalflake are all fair game though....

I think you may be thinking of thier Shimmirin Kandy Basecoats which you can apply over say BC25 (black) with 3 coats and than clear. BTW these candy basecoats require no catylist. AL

By saying "Traditional Kandy" I was talking about how it was originally done in the sixties -- the first candy apple red custom paint job was created by spraying red-tinted clear over a gold metallic basecoat.

When I do Kandy I use either kandy koncentrate (KK) in sg-100 over a metallic basecoat or HOK's Urethane Kandy (UK) over a metallic basecoat depending on the number of colors and type of look I'm trying to get.

RICKSTER YOU ARE CORRECT. HOK HAS A SEALER THAT IS METALLIC AND IS DESIGNED TO BE KANDIED RIGHT OVER. ITS CALLED KO-SEAL 2. I'VE USED IT BEFORE AND ITS NICE BECAUSE IT SAVES YOU THAT ONE STEP

JP, thanks for the tip, mixing the KK with the KO sealer sure would save alot of build on a full kustom paintjob /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

The saying is true, you learn something every day (if you keep your mind open).I've picked up more about HOK here than from the 'people in the know'.Thanx for the info you guys keep giving over what I can pry out of reps or people that play with this stuff. It's like the f***ers here want you to screw it up so they can gloat over your mishaps.Grown children on an ego trip, but it's all worth it when you blow out a perfect job or come back and do it by the book and they told you to 'do it this way because it works'.A little thought on the subject and the 'p' sheet they spent millions on to perfect the process with and you can weed out a bad rep real fast.Sorry to say many reps around here are wannabe's.Our PPG rep is excelent but people like the 3M rep only learned the sales pitch and have no idea what's going on-unless of course they think everyone here is inbred and gullible.I almost fell on the floor in hysterics when the 3M rep demo'd the cup liner system when he started touting the benefits-a week later I proved to the boss it was all a sales pitch and it actually costs more $ to have it.That took a little work though since he's a pencil pushing secretary and was thrown into the job with a head larger than a bulldozer running over your foot.Sorry for venting but this guy knows about as much about running a shop as I do about how a woman's mind works-0.Of course the insurance co's wanted him in without any Pro suspension because they knew they can walk all over him and he'll believe it.Again, sorry for venting.

lighten up on my boss would you. LOL. I feel your pain,my shop foreman couldn't manage a one stall outhouse and doesn't have a clue about bodywork or painting but he sure is friendly with the adusters. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tonofbricks.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif man am I glad I'm not the only one going thru this.We have well over 100 years experience between just 5 of us and we just can't get him to listen about things. He's on a material binge now because over the last 6 years there's about $12k missing (I know where it went),but instead of listening he flips out because I grab a 40 cent mixing cup for icewater.Doesn't matter I use it for about 10 weeks before turning it into a fastener bucket. It's ok that the new painter that was only a helper redoes 2/3 of his work at least once.I love these people that try to pick up the penny you glued to the floor and don't even see the dollar bill blowing by in the breeze. But then again if it weren't for these people there wouldn't be any entertainment.
