HOK clear flash times

I'll direct this to Rex cuz I think he is the only one else alive at this time of night.

Roughly how long is the flash time for HOK UC35 at 70 degrees? I'm monitoring it for stringing etc but a time would help a bit too.

Thanks
Wolf

In case Rex ain't around today,Roughly 5-15 minutes, depending on humidity and reducer temp,It will be wet, then real sticky, then starts to string when you pull your finger away, then it will stop stringing and be tacky, time for next coat!Every time seems a little differant, that's why they say "monitor religiously" in the tech sheet.

Thanks Jim,

I wasn't sure so I basically stood there watching it the entire time. Seemed to be about 10 - 12 minutes. Apart from three mosquitos that decided (god knows why) to land on various pieces it turned out great.

Damn it Jim,stop or I'll have to bow out and let you replace me!I gotta say the worst bug is a spider,I've had a few mosquito hawks hit and lose their legs(and man are they long)but a comakazi by a spider is usually a redo.Believe it or not I just sprayed some UC35 for the first time the other day.I was going over a sanded clearing already and I slightly over reduced it with PPGs reducers about 5 degrees warmer than it was and it laid out almost perfect. It took about 10 minutes between coats and it kind of threw me off, this stuff sprays much thinner than what I'm used to but it's a nicer product to work with ,it flows until it tacks up.PPG will lock up while its still flashing so it's a bit more work to get slick and the HOK won't solvent pop near as bad.To actually answer your Q it takes as long as it does, all you can do is take mental notes on your reducer selection compared to the temp and humidity and fine tune it from your observations. This is one of the parts of painting that can make or break a painter, using the reducer to your advantage is something most don't do.Just because it's 85 degrees doesn't mean you need the 85 reducer,if it's humid you need slower to get some flow and faster drying(believe it or not).

Rex,You probably forgot more than I'll ever know!I know how it is waiting on an answer but nobody is on the board so,if it looks like someone is waiting,I try to answer if I can.Hope you don't mind me grabbing the easy ones.Well, gotta go prime and paint the motorhome bumper we made.Later,Jim

I had a huge may fly land on mine the other night. They look like mesquitoes, but they are 10X bigger. Bugs piss me off. it helps to clear in the afternoon here in south east kansas. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/beat.gif

Well I got the mosquitos off but they each left a leg or two behind. The paint is HOK brandywine over Black pearl so the black legs kinda go with the look. There is no way I was going to start over because of a mosquito.

Jim,I don't mind in the least Buddy, you're throwing out alot of good answers for these guys in the amount of time you've been doing this and I appreciate the help alot with my current schedule.

Hoss, sounds like that May Fly is what we call a mesquito hawk, innocent to humans till they trash a paitjob.

Anyway, thanks again guys for your help!I gotta run thru the forum before I fall asleep a the keyboard again (yeah,I'm a wimpy bastard at times, haha).I shall return though if you don't mind the threat /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gif

The info in here is great and its that jump in and help attitude that I like most. Now if I had only not left the buffer running so long on that one spot I wouldn't have a burned spot. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif

Well at least I can get rid of the mosquito now that I have to repaint the darn thing.

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/haha.gifWe've all pulled that one so don't feel bad.Watched a kid warp the crap out of an aluminum hood after finger f*****g a bug and sitting the buffer there, man did he warp a knot in that before he realized he oops'd!

Well like I said on the bright side the tank was the only flawed piece in the entire project before the buffing incident so now I have the chance to make it perfect like the rest. WOO!
