How do I handle this????

I'm repainting my bike, when I removed the H-D decals on the tank they were cleared over. This left a large area of old base coat with no clear. Should I just prime and block this area or the whole tank? If so what type of primer because there are some small spots of bare metal. Thanks in advance.

Kevin,
You will need to 'feather' the complete area, and then prime the sides of the tank with 'epoxy prime' (catalyzed primer). Then you will need to block out the areas, repaint, and reclear the tank.

You can use 180 grit to feather the sides of the tank. Most of the time you will end up stripping these areas to metal.

I have a related question, for someone. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif

What is the best way to remove the factory decals (cleared over) on a tank? Just sand them off? Wouldn't that push the adhesive into the metal?

Thanks

We usually razor blade them off, then take the area around it down to metal. Sanding them takes quite a bit of time, plus it uses quite a bit of sandpaper.

When you blade them off do you use any type of heat, or is it not necessary? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif
