How long do I have to lay out flames over basecoat

If I spray my basecoat (PPG DBC) and then let it dry for an hour or so and start taping for my flames, it sometimes takes literally hours (like until the end of the day) to finish taping all the parts (fender, tank, and tail) After I spray the flames, then remove the tape, I shoot clear, and I always try and do this on the same day I sprayed the basecoat. I guess my question is where's the "breaking point" where I would need to scotchbrite the basecoat or use an adhesion promoter over the entire thing after removing the flame tapeout? I'm guessing if I have to spray the clear then next day (24 hours later) then I should use an adhesion promoter or scuff it....... What do you think???????

I'm not a PPG guy, so I can't tell you for sure, but the tech sheets avaiable where you buy you r paint should have this info.... If not, I am sure someone else on here knows off the top of their head! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/2idea.gif

Not sure with PPG but the base should be fine up to 24hrs. If you think its going to take longer then that I would shoot some clear scuff it and do the flames.

that's kinda what I've been thinking/using, 24 hours as a maximum...... So far so good, but just thought I'd ask around!

That 24hrs is at 70deg.At 85 it turns into 12 hrs,it's the 15deg rule.If you don't think you'll catch it in time you can either clear and sand to continue but the best thing to do is put a coat of dbc500 reduced like the base over it and lightly grey scuffy it to continue.Forget adhesion promoters unless you're working in HOK's system, the rest are junk.If PPG still makes the DX(?)1900 bonding clear don't buy it.If you're going to get real thick with DBC like multiple pearl and candy coats it's best to use the basecoat hardner but it's hard to measure accurately.DBU is better for this type of work but I haven't had a prob with 7 or 8 coats of DBC under clear.

I have always used a clear coat between my base and patterns. In this way you just scuff your clear coat, and take as long as you want to do the taping. I try to stay away from using adhesive promoters, but if you have to, use HOK’s.

On my last post that "HOK’s." is a type error (oops), just use House of Kolor's adhesive promoter.

I use PPG and House of Kolor I always spray one coat of DBC 500 Color Blender over everthing before I start to mask the flames. This will also give you a 24 hour work time. I have had parts sit longer than that before I am ready to spry my final clear. If that happens I just spray one more coat of the DBC 500 over everthing before I clear.

Better scuff it if it sits too long.It will stick to a point but not that great.Last time I redid my tanks the tinted clear and flames scraped off pretty easy with a razorblade because I pushed the base color for taping. It was based in the evening, taped and flamed in the morning with the candy, the whole thing candied and cleared-about 18-20 hrs from base to cleaning the clear gun but it was about 80 degrees. When they say at 70 they mean it,everything changes from that temp. except flash time and to a point cure time.

I always put a clear coat on aand scuff. You never know what could come up and set you back on time. Also creates a buffer between colors in case of a screw up.

This is the best paint site I've seen, but it's actually Scott's place. In reality it's a sub site of his painting site so if you came in the back door it would be good to read his rules for this forum. The 2 biggies are no e-mail addresses and nothing that would be considered competition for his buisness.Glad to have you here.

Oh no,I see alot of people miss the main site and not read the rules and immediately throw up a site or email address because they skipped over it,just figured I'd give you a quick heads up to be safe-gets old telling people something they agreed to(really, should have read to begin with) over and over.Welcome aboard man /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif
