Just wanted to know how many of you still get orange peel? Ive been doing some searching on this board about orange peel. Ive seen a lot of good posts from Rex and Ezrider ect. But seems like Im still haveing problems! Im pretty new to the paint game and after painting a few parts (10-20) I just cant seem to get it! Ive been pretty good about runs and sags but cant get the clear to lay down smooth! Im using UC35 and a elcheapo gun. I read in another post where Rex said to turn up the air on the gun. Im going to try that on my next part. Sometimes I just feel like giving up! I sanded through my clear today in a small spot trying to get all the peel out! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif So after many years of painting do you guys still get peel?

Oh yeh.Sometines I get lazy and don't walk out to the booth to read the temp and humidity so I guess,or misguess, and it comes out a bit peely.I love scooters, everything's so round it just lays like glass. If you're using an elcheapo it might have a huge tip in it like a 1.6 or larger.Seems to me I recall HOK using a HVLP with a 1.5 tip as a baseline.Try a few more lbs of air and choke back on the fluid knob,it sounds like you're getting too much material out of it and/or moving too slow. You could have the jitters too if you've ran the last couple jobs, you worry so much about not running it you 'back off' too much.Dumb question but you are using the right temp reducer right?

Thanks rex that makes me feel a little better! The tip is a HVLP 1.4 tip and I have the fluid knob all the way open. The air at the gun is 25lbs and my reducer is ok. Im going to shoot again tomorrow and give some of those ideas a try and see what happens. Thanks again for the advice! Love this site! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cheers.gif

25 psi is too low. If I'm not mistaken, most of the HOK paints range from 40-60 psi.
The tech sheets are available on their website.
Good luck,
Mike

You might want to try a tack coat with UC-35. I use uc35 and apply a thin first coat then let it flash for 10-15 minutes.
Then continue with your other coats. When I do things right and take my time I do not get a sag or run in the clear after I apply a tack coat with UC-35. As for the orange peel I can get UC-35 to lay pretty smooth, but occasional I still get orange peel on the sides of the fenders I clear.

Your right, don't know what I was thinking.
Most HVLP guns need at least 30 psi to develop 10 psi at the cap (from what I've been able to gather)

The 1.4 is a good tip.Definately turn up the pressure and choke down the fluid.Start with about 1/2 fluid and 40lb and play from there.Did you try a search on gun setup? There's been a few and get lengthy but if you can't find them I'll go thru it again.Let me know.

I finally layed down some nice clear today! I bought some flo klear from HOK and turned up the PSI like you said. I found that 35 works well for my gun. Thanks again for the help! Now I only hope it keeps up like this! Thanks again!

I use UC-35...sprayed at about 40-50 lbs. I also spray the first coat medium wet, let it tack. Then hose it. I get very minimal orange peel.
Watch those rivets though /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif

I have used the flo clear, but thought it took too long to dry. Talk about clears that take along time to dry, I used to use PPG 894 to spray a tank set. It's very slow drying

oftentimes I will spray 2 good wet coats (PPG 2021) with a splash of accelerator in it. The next day, I will wet sand it with 600g to knock it down (carefull around the edges!!!!!!), wipe it off clean, and mix up my next batch of clear at 4:1:2 or 4:1:3, and then spray a couple coats of that. The extra reducer seems to really get it to lay down flat, especially over a 600g wet sanded surface. Just be careful for drips, they manifest themselves more easily...... I'm using a HVLP jamb gun, with something like 40-50 psi showing on my little gauge at the gun, and spraying in a homemade booth in my garage. I have "climate control" to a certain point (heat and AC in the garage) but no control over humidity, btw.....
