How much clear?

So I was experimenting with my spray gun last night. I noticed that if I pulled the gun a little further from the surface and slowed things down a little bit the clear would lay down much smoother. When I'm closer to the surface it covers much quicker but I tend to get a little orange peel. However, when I'm closer, I use far less clear. I guess my question is, in general, how much clear do you mix up to do a tac-coat of clear and 2-3 flow coats?

it depends on what your clearing. there is a big difference between a gas tank and a car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gif

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/foreheadslap.gifI guess that info would help...I'm working on a Honda VTX motorcycle tank. I was wondering about a general amount for tanks. Estimates for other items would be helpful as well (hood, full car, full bike, etc...).

Generally when I clear a tank and fenders I mix up 6-8 ounces (usually 6) for 2-3 coats.

Holy sh!t,6 ounces?!What are you using?I might get 2 coats on a Sporty set but that's pushing it and I just get it wet.Distance does matter alot since it affects overspray but the 6-8" rule is pretty much the norm.I would probably use that 6 ounces on that tank for 3 coats.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to get 2 wetcoats on with about 4 ounces. I'll most likely mix a little more next time and go with a 3rd wet coat until I can lay it on a little smoother.
