How to paint all my parts ?

I am thinking about painting my Ultra.

My question is: Should I paint all of the parts at the same time? If I take everything apart, I end up with like 16 pieces to paint. That's alot of parts to support, hang, etc. I suppose the base color may not be a problem, but what about if I shoot a kandy base with kandy ghost flames. If I don't paint all of the pieces at the same time, will I end up with a different shade of kandy?

I haven't sprayed any kandy before, so I have to spend some time practicing.

Thanks for any help.

(Maybe I should practice on my wife's suzuki????) /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/think.gif

Kev,
If you plan on spraying your Ultra in candy, yes, you should spray them all at once. Even then, it is still hard to get all the parts in the exact shade. You really have to know what your doing to spray a big set like that in candy.

You will also need a bigger booth to do this in. I have a 26' booth and it's a little tight to fit all the parts in, and still have room to move around.

You may want to just consider using a nice bc/cc color. Lot's of neat colors that have a 'rich' look to them. This will be alot more forgiving then doing them in candy.

That's what I thought. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/headbutt.gif
I suppose even with bc/cc, I should paint all the parts at the same time.

Maybe I should just bite the bullet and have you do it. At least that way I won't loose any of my riding season. (no heat in the garage)

Kev,
You can get away withspraying all the parts separate if you use bc/cc, but this really depends on which color you go with. It's always best just to do them all at once.

I don't know what you have, but I have a spare set for an Electra-Glide. Not for sure if it's the same as yours. They are off of a 2001. Includes everything except a tour pak. Need to get $1200 plus the paint job for them.

Mine is a '99 ultra. No money in the budget right now. That's why I am thinking about painting it myself, but it seems like the more I think about it, the more I start to talk myself out of it. I need to update my tool collection first if I want to paint them. ( small 5hp compressor, Binks #7 & 2001 guns, & no buffer ) I am figuring I would have to spend approx. $1500 to get the equip I need. Not including the paint I need to aquaint myself to the new paints. I sure would hate to screw it up, and have to redo it.

I have a turbine hvlp setup I use for spraying cabinets. It has 4 different needles. I might try some bc/cc on the tailgate of my truck, and see how it works.

Thanks for all your and everybody's help on this board. It really makes me want to paint again.
