how do you know if your pushing 10psi at the tip? is there a special tool you have to buy or what.

Your gun manual should tell you how much PSI at the gun to run, which will in turn run 10 PSI at the tip.

well unfortunatly its a gun that was bought new 5-6 years ago and handed down to me from my father, so the manual is gone. I think its a crappy 19.99 harbor freight gun. im going to look at some DeVilis guns tonight.

Get you a SATA if you can afford it.
I got mind for $380 (I think) on eBay. Retail is about $480.
It's a digital, coated with blue. I forget what they call them.

Believe it or not, I used a siphon fed Devilbiss for many years even including after I started the business. This includes a 1.6 setup. I had two of them. one for clear, and one for the base with the same setup.
It's all in the 'finger' control. I'm still trying to get my painter to learn this method...to use your thumb as a stop...give me any gun I'll spray it.

In fact, I've had a GEO gun for about 8 years now, that I only used it about 5 times in the whole time I've had it.
Very hard to switch from a siphon to a HVLP especially if you don't care to (if it 'aint broke, don't fix it)

Right now, we have 3 SATA's and I demoted my JGA's to primer guns /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shrug.gif

Anyway...enjoy!

well at his point I dont have that much to spend, im looking at around $150-$200 max. before now I have sprayed high build primer on a car and clear on 2 helmets. thats my extent with a paint gun (HVLP) so anything I get will be what I learn with. I am just hoping to get something that will make the learning curve slightly shorter. I think with enough time and material I could learn to use my $19.99 harbor freight gun but I just recently upgrade from my 10 year old paasche vl to an awata eclpise and I now know that you get what you pay for. my paasche seems like a krylon can now. so anyway I am just needing something with a little more precision I think. ive already laid down nice glossy coats on my first 2 helmets my only problem so far is solvent pop. But I shall overcome hahahaha. thanks for all the info guys.

Try taking a look at the DeVilbiss Finishline 3. You can get the gun for around $130. Autobodydepot.net sells a kit with 1.3, 1.5, 1.8 and 2.2mm tips along with a hard case, regulator, some little stuff and of course the gun for $229.

yep I ordered just the gun with the 1.3 tip and regulator last night. I figured I could use my old one for primers and the finishline 3 for CC. so well see what happens I guess.
