I can\'t believe it ! !#@^*&

I can't believe it . After all the help you guys gave me I was ready to put the flames on my gas tank that I finally had perfect ! Thanks guys the evercoat poly in the tube, the epoxy primer ans thinning it down for the sealer worked GREAT
bigokay.gif
So I had both fenders done ready to lay out the flames for my gas tank tonight and shoot them in the morning.
WHEN........My girlfriends daughter comes in and says I'm really sorry but I was climbing up on your bench and knocked your paint gun off the top shelf.....and it fell on your gas tank.
mad.gif
crap.gif
. Well it couldn't of just fallen with the cup down, no it fell with the tip pointing down right onto the side crown of the tank. Well I've got about 2 ounces of the basescoat color left to paint with . It's about 1/2 inch around and 1/2 deep. AAAAARRRGGGHHH. Sorry had to blast off somewhere my girlfriend hit me with the ...don't get mad honey it was just an accident. I said yea dent being the key word!
Well here is my question, do I bondo then poly fill or can I just get away with the filler ? I don't really have any tools to get in and knock it out with.<font color=yellow><font size=6>
THANKS

Noel, easy with the profanity (just kidding). This really sucks dosent it? Well hopefully you have the body work part down now. 2 ounces of paint should be enough to get you through this disaster. You will want to keep your body work as small as possable. if you dont have access to a dent puller set up (weld on stud type ) you can just fill it. Make sure to take care of any high spots with a body hammer, being that its a small dent you can get away with just using the poly putty. Ruff the dented area up (not your girlfriends daughter ) with some 80 grit sand paper slightly larger than the dented area , you have to blend the body work into the exhisting surface, not just fill the dentsand with 80 than finish it off with 180. Remember keep it as small as possable, with fixing the dent correctly. feather out any edges in the paint. use your filling primer keep it small , a little further than your body work. you might want to mask it a bit to keep the over spray off of your base coat becouse you dont have enough to recoat the whole tank (with out leaving any tape lines in the primer )let the primer dry. sand only the primed area with 400 wet keep it small. re base the primed area and let dry. tape your art work and keep your girlfriends daughter away from your parts and your ready to continue from where you left off.

Thanks Joe I think thats why I always had problems before. I never really thought about feathering in the filler and primer I had just slapped some in where the dent was. Thanks for saving me again! I'll post some pics when I get them done.

Thanks Again!

Boy you got that right Rex,
Just a quick story, when I was redoing my truck, my daughter (she was about 5 at the time) was out in the garage. I walked out and found her sanding my freshly painted basecoat/clearcoat frame.
Needless to say, I wasn't too happy.

Well...anyway, she's about due for her own car, and well...........

I still have plenty of sand paper left

Just so you don't feel alone... and I wish I had a kid to blame this on.... Grrrr...

go here http://photos.yahoo.com/bc/mac_muz15/lst?.dir=/Tank+Paint&.view=t

check out both "spike re" pics, saving liberty, and paint pulled.

instantly you will feel better, and if you move on in the sequence maybe you will renew the project with a lighter heart.

I would place limits where your bike and paint are as well. Explain the safety issues to your girl, and her child.

Things like fumes, and words like isocryinates, cancer, and fire outta do it!

If that doesn't work, mention killing.... LOL Mac

Well thanks guys I feel alot better now. Hell when I first saw that dent it looked like it was about a foot deep. I'm taking rex's advice and things are looking up quick. I might be goin out camping for a few days as I have the week off. I'll post some pics when I get done .
Hell it's not gonna be as pretty as Macs but for my first job I'll be happy with it.

Thanks guys!

AFTER READING YOUR POST I COULDN'T HELP BUT REMEMBER A SIMILAR INCIDENT INVOLVING MY SISTER WHEN I WAS A KID. MY DAD JUST FINISHED PAINTING A CAMARO AND MY SISTER ABOUT 7 YEARS OLD AT THE TIME DECIDED SHE WANTED TO HELP MY DAD. SHE PICKED UP A SHEET OF SAND PAPER AND PROCEEDED TO SAND THE FRESH PAINT.

Noelbiker,

That was my first try ever.... had it not been for this place that bike would be flat black today....

I was not seeking a compliment, but thanks.

I was trying to show you to stick to the job and fix it and move on.....

I almost lost my paint job many times......

I had dust, hairs, water from wet sanding hide at the filler cap, chemical reactions, lifted paint from pulling tape, and a few runs.....

I hate to let things mechanical beat me, but this was not mechanical, but more chemical...

I don't learn fast, and do not read all that well to understand what I read the first time.

But the guys here put up with my moaning and growning, and literaly pounded in my head what I needed to do, with out telling me I am not all that swift when they could have blown me off.

Maybe they thought I just might get the job done. Maybe they thought I wouldn't quit...

I can't say what they thought.... I came here and asked questions, and at first I got answers as if i knew something about what I was doing, but after a time they saw I was a Knownuthin, and I still am about paint...

1 job does not make a expert of me... I will never be, even if I start today, as I am to old to get 30 years of this under my belt, unless I paint in heaven......

That bit on the Camaro is funny from here! LOL

Re: I can\'t believe it ! !#@^*&

And The saga continues... Well thanks to what I've learned the dent came out fine with one application of poy puty. So I.m checkin out the rest of the tank and see the paint gun must of also hit the bung when it fell. There were heavy cracks around the bung so I start pickin at it and clean out the loose paint to about 3/4 of an inch back around the bung.
crap.gif

So I figure hell, I know what to do so I mix some expoxy primer and thin it to shoot it with the airbrush. I layed about 8 coats of the stuff down with 10 mins. flash time in-between. Well
now everything seems to be going great,so I wait about an hour and start sanding . I t looks great and I get to the last quarter space around the bung. Well I'm sanding and the putty is moving! I know I mixed the right activator and all ,It was 80 degrees out so I figure there was enough dry time. So mabey it was too thin or something. Before I layed down th new expoxy I went down to bare metal and hit the spot with self etching primer and let it flash for 20 mins. It only was soft about a 1/4 of the way around
confused.gif
.
well I peeled the soft stuff out and went to bed. Today I think I'll just fill the spot with putty and hit it with a light coat of the filler thinned down a little for sealer. Hell Thanks to you guys th dent was the least of my probs. I did as you tought me and I didn't have to refill it once it was perfect after 1 app.
<font size=4>
I'll get this done right if it kills us ! LOL
<font color=yellow><font size=6>
Thanks

Re: I can\'t believe it ! !#@^*&

Noel, putting that much primer is too much. if necessary to use that much let it dry at least over night before you do any sanding. i know you must be excited about finishing your paint job mut have patients. i am from CT and have the same sucky weather you are experiancing, humidity like this dosent allow material to dry as fast as you think it would being this HOT.
