I need help!

I tried using a vinyl paint mask from the sign shop to spray a H-D logo on my marbalized tank. I used a thinned out HOK silver-white pearl throught an airbrush. The pearl ate through the intercoat I had over the marbalizer and in some spots all the way to the black base. Did I spray it on to thick? It also lifted pretty much everywhere and left a huge edge. Any ideas?

Scott, I was trying for the ghost emblem effect you have on a couple of your jobs. Can you help me out? I'm having to resand my tank and start over with the base. I don't want to make this mistake again.

I don;t think anything aet though your work, unless you thined your silver HOK with
a paint thiner and not the crorect reducer,
You most likly did or didn't do something with in the prep, non if you are going for a gosty look
over a marble (didnt'say what color mrable)with a siver this may have helped in your delima, pearl silver/white you need to dust it on and as you put your coats on don;t over doit ......Live and Learn

I see no one has responded to this so let me give it a try. The pearl won't eat through anything, but, whatever the carrier for the pearl was may have. if you have a big edge, you probably sprayed to much. I know different paint systems can cause problems with each other but if you used the same intercoat clear to cover the marbelized area as you did to carry the pearl that really shouldn't be the case. the way you prepped the piece may have something to do with it. Did you scuff the base?(depending on if you sprayed it and how long it sat if you did)Did you wipe it down with wax and grease remover? Did you wipe off the wax and grease remover? Not wiping off the wax and grease remover can affect adhesion. Just wipe it off with water, dry it and tack rag it.

Hope that might help, good luck

Thanks for the responses. The white/silver pearl is a HOK base not a dry pearl. I I just reduced per the directions and sprayed with an airbrush. To answer some of the questions mentioned: I did scuff, I did clean as I normally do, and it is all HOK paint. I believe my problem was that (1) I sprayed too much and (2) the reducer reactivated the SG-100.

Here is what I plan to do next:
Redo the Silver/white Marbalizer
Apply SG-100 (for adhesion of the Kandy)
Apply the Tangerine Kandy (UK)
Apply 3 coats of UC-35 clear
Wet sand smooth with 600 grit
Tape off my graphics
LIGHTLY airbrush the silver/white
Apply 3 more coats of UC-35
Wetsand 1500-2000 grit
Buff

Do you think I will be safer doing the graphics over UC-35 (HOK) than over SG-100?

Thanks again for all the help. I plan to post some pictures when I'm done!

I don't have the means myself but I would probably use a finish clear everytime I wanted to protect sections of work. Not only would it be safer for taping, but if you screw up you can clean it off without damaging the underpainting. The only thing to find out for sure is total thickness. I understand there is a recommended mil thickness you should stay under. I would see if someone at HOK could answer that>
