hello all! new to the forum, glad i found it :haha:

im 17 YO and i would like to get into painting motorcycles/cars as a hobby or carrier, and im kinda having a ruff time looking where to start. im pretty much 100% new to vehicles, and painting on them, although i wanted to study art in college anyway to enhance my current capabilities.

so do any of you guys know of any books i could go pick up, or the cost of starting out bran new?

on my motorcycle forum i was told to buy some scrap mettle and some painting materials, practice on that, seems like a good idea-but even then idk what that would cost?

any and all help appreciated :ears:

Hello,
I remember when I got out of high school, I went to a local auto-body school (PVTI). I learned quite a bit there, but toward the end, I went coop which meant I went part day to school, then the other half of the day, I worked at a job that did auto body. I was pretty much their do-boy, but I did learn alot just watching and helping out.
Now I own my own custom paint shop with 3 employees.

So my advice would be to either check out local schools as an option, or put in applications has a helper just to get your foot in the door.
Have a good attitude and ask questions (but still remain a good helper) and you'll learn a ton and go far!

cool, i was looking for some shops like that in my city, going to have to dig though lol.

and is the painting business a good one? im looking at 2 diff jobs, some kind of artist, or going into pharmacy(for the money, and kind of interesting). my plan is do pharmacy for a few years to get settled, then going back and picking up arts as a 2nd job or something, but if the pay is good i can go into it right away! :haha:

thanks again for the help!

I startid out in the very wrong end, but i'm getting to a point where i've learned quiet a lot! if you're able to, you really shold start spending some time at a body-shop! Work, talk, help, whatever! If not, you should by a spraygun at wallmart, as what i think is a "all-in-all" store in the US, right? just buy the cheapest stuff you find. and ask a local bodystore to buy some of the leftovers.. that should be a start..

Only problem being, painting is the easy part.. It's prepping that's A and O, best way to learn this is simply to do it, over and over again.. bondo, sand, bondo, sand, etc etc.. just that this will be pretty expensive, and you will hate everything that has with painter to do..

The way I learn most everything is to get some videos and practise. I started my business 34 years ago from reading a book. You can start also by watching videos and research on the net. How good you become will be decided on the effort you put in. Start small and learn one item at a time ( flames) ect. Go to "Auto Body Depot", they have all the videos you will need for awhile. Ed Hubbs is a excellant source for info, (on you tube). Master one step at a time. Go to the junk yard and get a fender and do the body work, paint prep, and paint work. This is not a waste. You now have a piece to show a cliet. Your first paint job might be a friends bike. Then maybe his helmet. You get it?
